Terror Within Us
The movie The Purge is built on suspense from not knowing who is going to kill you or who is behind you. The obscurity is not knowing if the people who are following the guy that was let in the house also came in or not. In the horror genre they uses the sublime theory of Burke by building the obscurity, violence, and suspense on the audience. In every scene one of this items are played out and create people to think of ideas that can happen.
The suspense of the movie starts when Charlie sees on one of the cameras that a stranger is running down there driveway and yelling for help. The son unarms the house to the stranger that’s when the father and mother run down stairs to see what was happening and to arm the house again.

That scene shows how violent the movie is going to be and how the suspense is going to build up. When the people are starring into the camera the whole family is scared and that’s when the mother and father start to look for the intruder that is inside the house. When they are looking for the person, the other group of people that is outside start to come inside the house through the windows opening the doors. Once they are inside the house it seems like they are playing hide and seek, but when they find the people they are looking for they kill them. When the audience keeps jumping to ideas it makes the movie very intersecting because everyone has different ideas of who can be under the mask and what is their motive of purging. So when the end of the movie it ends of being the neighbors because they hate how this family lives and how perfect their life’s are. They kill the father at the end and are about to kill the mother but the guy the little boy help saves her and the family. At the end when the man that was save comes out again makes the viewers wonder where he was through the whole movie. It gives the movie a different kind of twist to the movie, because he only appears couple of times in the movie, and hi saving the family is like thanking them for saving him from being killed.
It has them wonder was he shot or killed, but there is this scene when the boy had built this remote car with a camera and with that he helps the guy hide in secret place. Then from there the guy doesn’t come out into the end. The boy keeps him saved and when he is hiding, it makes people wonder if he is going to get caught or not. Neither the family nor the group of people know where the guy is at. The family does not want anything to happen so they try to find the guy so the individuals can leave without harming their family. It taught me a lot like how a family should be and how a family should not be. The play makes you think wow this can really relate to me as a high school student and athlete. Linda needs to learn to speak her mind no matter what her husband says because people have rights and she should be able to talk about what she thinks is going on with her family. “When Linda converses with her husband it’s almost as if se walking on eggshells and almost that she is taking to a frail eggshell that is her husband’s mental state.” (Source 2). Nothing Linda says to try to help her husband will work because she is someone who gets under her skin and makes it a lot worse to willy but too anyone else she is doing anything in her power to help him much like and other wife would do for their husband. A couple weeks after willy dies after all that the family has been through with him it’s a very sad dad but the family is very mad at him still so it is a very hard position to be in and I know I would never want to be to in the position that this family is in. willy was a very mean and angry person to his family and had a lot of stress going on in his life this is why we need to realize that all he wanted was to make his family happy but it was just something he could not do so he gave up and just took all of his anger out on
As an audience, we can see bad guys sneaking up behind the characters in the movie before they realize what is happening. In the movie, Halloween, the audience is able to see the character Michael Myers when he is sneaking up on his victims before they notice him. This gives us the element of suspense in waiting for him to attack. In a situation like this, something bad is obviously going to happen so it is only a matter of time until it does. When something finally does happen, the audience is often startled even if it was predictable. The film that I have chosen to analyze is “The Purge”. “The Purge” is a 2013 American horror film directed by James DeMonaco. It was released on June 7, 2013, to mixed reviews. I will be analyzing “The Purge” by looking at conflict theory, class division, the importance of the ethnicity of each individual character, and the government’s overall political and economic agenda. In brief, I believe that Purge night takes place because of Conflict theory, due to political and economic agendas.
Each element helps each other by making the next scene better than the one before. It has the storyline come to live, and having people thinking what can happen next or who has the power in the movie. By seeing this movie it can make someone feel complete and satisfied for a long time.
In the beginning the film is immediately set up in the film noir style. Under the opening credits a shadowy backround image is shown kaleidoscopically. Couples dressed in elegant ballroom gowns and suits waltz together dizzyingly as the "Merry Widow Waltz" plays. The scene has nothing to do with the drama to follow (until Charlie's crimes are revealed.) The titles dissolve in to a panoramic view of a bridge, further dissolves take us first to junkyard and then to a scene of children playing in the street. The city is shown as a dirty, dark place. We are taken to a Philadelphia rooming house (shown with a number 13 on the door.) Inside we are introduced to "Uncle Charlie" (Joseph Cotten). He is reclining stiffly in bed during the day in a seedy room. . He plays with the phallic cigar that he is smoking, seemingly bitter and cynical. On the bedside table next to seemingly indifferent and fatigued man is and an open billfold with a carelessly strewn pile of bills on top (some of the bills have fallen to the floor and lie strewn around). The overweight, middle-aged landlady knocks on the door and enters, identifying him as Mr. Spencer and informing him that two men have been asking for him. As per his instructions to not disturb him, she didn't let them in, however, they have not left, instead they retreated to the street corner to stake out the boarding house. Noticing that he looks exhausted and depressed (he passively remains on his bed during their entire conversation), she suggests that he should get some rest. The filmmakers want the audience to anticipate things like the villains backstory, or which characters they believe will survive. The filmmakers then introduce grotesque images over the plot to increase the feelings the audience associates with the characters and their stories.
