Going to the Movies: "The Purge"
In today 's society, movies are viewed as a way of relaxation. Movie lovers enjoy seeing scenes in movies based on real life events. Some of these scenes may include high rates of violence that can cause destruction and serious chaos if implemented in real life. What comes to people 's mind when they hear the word "purge"? The purge is fiction movie directed by James deMonaco which retracts events that would totally cause some controversy within a society. As the theme of the movie suggests, that is the time of the year that all the insane and illegal actions come to be legal for twelve-four hour period. Several atrocities were committed. Madness: A History, a film by the Films Media Group, is the final installment of a five part series, Kill or Cure: A History of Medical Treatment. It presents a history of the medical science community and it’s relationship with those who suffer from mental illness. The program uses original manuscripts, photos, testimonials, and video footage from medical archives, detailing the historical progression of doctors and scientists’ understanding and treatment of mental illness. The film compares and contrasts the techniques utilized today, with the methods of the past. The film offers an often grim and disturbing recounting of the road we’ve taken from madness to illness.
The movie “Walkout” is about the school system in East Los Angeles in the late 1960’s. During this time Mexican Americans were treated unfairly and were seen as second class citizens. The story goes through the different aspects that Mexican American/ Chicano students had to put up with within their own schools. They wanted and deserved equal education, but were constantly shut down by the city. This movie contains the four characteristics of Mexican American Art, which is what gives this movies such a strong and meaningful message.
The first way they track them is by a group called “The Joint Terrorism Task Force (JTTF). This task force helps track the terrorist activities and all of their movement to determine what they are planning. Once they find out any information they report it back to the FBI which is the lead agency. Furthermore, they find out how they plan on doing these things through tracking their cell phones, emails, and text messages. They catch some of the operatives and get them to give out information on how the terrorist cells are operating as well as where they plan to attack
One critical framework that we see throughout all of the media today that tries to get the message out to the audience is conventions. Conventions are the use of different lighting, camera angles, sound effects, and music that try to reveal a message. In this paper we will examine the conventions in Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas and how they are used to describe what is right and wrong in society and what the true American dream is.
Being the oldest daughter of a Senior ATF Agent, I have been exposed to domestic terrorism all of my life. My father has investigated thousands of bombings, fires, and explosions for more than twenty years now. Many of these incidents were examples of the terrorism that I speak about. His experiences have taught me countless lessons and informed me of many current events. The information that I have obtained from him is far more valuable than anything that the media could ever possibly convey. Though he is always strictly guarded with the confidences of his profession, he has always provided me with a firsthand knowledge of the impact that domestic terrorism has on the citizens and law enforcement. Through him, I learn the facts of these incidents without the media’s exaggerations. Today I will share with you some of these facts. I will talk to you about the impact that domestic terrorism has on our citizens. These impacts include: the monetary damages that terrorism inflicts, along with the injuries to the victims, the shocking repercussions that are embedded into the minds and souls of the people who come to sort through the rubble to find the survivors and the remaining evidence.

In the case of domestic terrorism, the act must be planned, supported, and carried out all within the boundaries of the United States. The domestic terrorists must also be domicile to the United States and not be current foreign nationals at the time of the act. The film that I have chosen to analyze is “The Purge”. “The Purge” is a 2013 American horror film directed by James DeMonaco. It was released on June 7, 2013, to mixed reviews. I will be analyzing “The Purge” by looking at conflict theory, class division, the importance of the ethnicity of each individual character, and the government’s overall political and economic agenda. In brief, I believe that Purge night takes place because of Conflict theory, due to political and economic agendas.
The movie The Purge is built on many elements from Burke’s theory about the sublime. The main ones that are seen more than once in the movie is terror, obscurity, power, and the violence. The sublime theory is used in many of the horror movies, because it makes the people feel an emotion that they can’t express. When people watch The Purge it has them on the edge of their seats to see what is going to happen next in the movie. Before the civil rights movement could begin, a few courageous individuals had to guide the way. Dr. Vernon Johns was one of those individuals. Dr. Vernon Johns was a pastor and civil rights activist in the 1920s. Johns became the pastor of Dexter Avenue Baptist Church in Montgomery, Alabama in the late 1940s. During his time as a pastor, Johns preached many sermons on how African American people were being treated not only in the community but in society. The article “ Why You Should Go to the Movies (and Do Other Stuff) Alone” by Jesse Singal, talks about a social investigation on a single person V.S. groups doing activities such as visiting an art gallery and sitting in coffee shops. The article which Singal writes on was conducted by Rebecca Ratner and Rebecca Hamilton. Their experiments were shown to prove that people overthink being judged by others. I think people should be able to do stuff on there own because an individual shouldn’t care about what other people might think of them.
The history of the slave era has been consistent throughout the past years whether it is told through textbooks or documentaries. Slavery through history is remembered as an era in which thousands of individuals were robbed from their freedom and treated with mass cruelty. History generally goes into depth on what slavery was and why it lasted for over two centuries, and the reason being is that African Americans were viewed as extremely profitable property, not as actual living human beings, “the sense of the humanity of these people were simply suppressed for the sake of gold” (“Africans in America” 1998). Another point to mention is the fact that history focuses on the overall picture of slavery and what it was, not necessarily what impact it had on African Americans and the individual hardships they endured.
The effects of small arms and light weapons (SALW) trafficking has come under scrutiny in the past decade due to the amount of weapons U.S. SALW manufacturers are hemorrhaging overseas primarily because traceability, culpability, and transparency of information are difficult to come by. Small arms are for personal use and include, “pistols, rifles,... assault rifles and light machine guns.” Light weapons include “heavy machine guns,... portable antiaircraft guns, portable antitank guns,... and explosive devices” (Gildea). Each year this illegal trade occurs, the United States is losing billions of dollars, moving weapons into the hands of terrorist organizations or gangs, and these weapons are often used against our military personnel. This paper will discuss the process of acquiring export licenses, quantify the scope of SALW has on the U.S., identify key agencies, and provide suggestions on how to address this dangerous and costly problem.
