The most challenging part in this course so far was keeping up with the reading materials prior to the lecture days. Most of the textbook readings were concise and short. However, the readings on canvas were extremely long and more difficult to comprehend. For instance, the article by Krieger on embodiment, was a difficult article to comprehend. Prioritizing time to read all the articles was the most tremendous obstacle, due to the fact that I ‘am taking five upper level courses this semester. Three of the five courses are psychology courses and they also require substantial amount of reading materials. Therefore, managing time to read the class materials became overwhelming. This project has helped me become vastly aware of the food products that I consumed on a day to day bases. For this project, we were instructed to monitor our food intake for five days. This five day report incorporated data on protein, lipids, carbohydrates and other essential nutrition’s found in our food. The five day recordings accurately represented a person’s day to day diet, helped keep tract of exactly what the individual ate. Eating can sometimes be mindless. For instance, when an individual is eating, they are checking their e-mails, watching TV, or having a conversation with someone; therefore, keeping track of what the person eats, is a form of reality check. As I have mentioned earlier, some of the reading materials were hard to grasp and one of those articles was by Krieger on the topic of embodiment. Embodiment claims that our bodies tell stories of the condition of our living. I could not grasp this concept because it looks at health in a holistic view, it looks at how humans very in particular social context. For instance, some people may have better health because of their social context while others may suffer because of their poor social context. I have always learned that genes and environment contribute to one’s health, but embodiment claims that even our social context contributes to health as well.
