My interest in nutrition stems from my parent’s careers, my mum works in weight management, and my dad works in catering. This meant my upbringing revolved around cooking and eating nutritious meals; I now realise how fortunate I have been, because as I’ve grown up I have become aware of the lack of education there is around healthy eating, causing a rise of fast food restaurants and convenience meals. It is concerning that many children in the UK are growing up believing these foods are good for them, and parents are often not aware of the potential impact a bad diet has on their children. This is why I would like to take a degree in nutrition; I want to educate children about nutrition, as if we begin teaching them from a young age, they’ll be more likely pursue a good diet into …show more content…

In addition to this, the course covers excretion, where I have been taught about the detrimental effects of a bad diet on the liver and kidneys. Furthermore, my A-level in sociology studies how diet can affect functions in society; in the family module, how working class and middle class family’s diets differ, often with money being a factor. This links the education module, where I learnt how the diet is a factor in the achievement of children; working class children underachieve because of a poor diet, leading them to be malnourished and tired. I chose to do an Extended Project with the topic title 'To what extent will the Sugar Tax Industry Levy be a solution to childhood obesity?' This has furthered my interest of nutrition, in particular the paediatric sector as it has given me an insight into the extent of the obesity problem we are facing. In addition to this, I have found my EPQ to be an eye opening experience into the amount of sugar that is added to our food, furthering my enthusiasm to make a positive change to
