Practice Summary Paper In the summer semester if 2015, I begin taking courses at Old Dominion University’s RN>BSN program. I originally enrolled in the program because I was aware that obtaining a bachelor’s degree would soon become a requirement at the many local hospitals in my area. As a new nursing graduate I was oblivious to what benefits of having a bachelor’s degree could offer. I was going to school because I had to not because I wanted to. While taking courses I had hopes of accomplishing a new found knowledge of what it means to be a nurse and learn the career pathways that lay ahead of me. Throughout the RN>BSN program I fulfilled assignment requirements that required critical thinking skills. In nursing 306, there was a theory paper that was allow an in-depth analysis of a nursing theory/model. I choose the Orem’s self-care deficit nursing theory to discuss how it functions as a guideline for mature individuals to maintain a sense of personal development and healthy living while providing care for themselves. I used my critical thinking skills to assess the patient’s needs and plan care accordingly. In nursing 402, I identified a problem within the unit where I am employed. Patient who had and epidural to relieve labor pains where in need of an indwelling urinary catheter. The nursing staff placing that catheter were improperly securing that device to the patient’s lower extremity. The conducted a needs assessment and created teaching project that required critical thinking skills. The outcome of this assignment addressed inconsistencies on the unit and corrected the issue through the creation of a teaching plan that involved the continuation of education as it relates to patient safety. The critical thinking objectives of this program created the foundation for the nursing care that I am currently providing
