There were many different nuclear weapons used in World War II. They were not all used in the same way or by the same people. Also, many different people in invented all the different types of bombs and other various weapons. The weapons severely injured and also killing many people at the same time. One nuclear bomb that was used during World War II was the atomic bomb. In the city of Hiroshima, Japan is where the first atomic bomb was dropped. The bomb was dropped on August 6th, 1945. This was a gun-type fission bomb that had the nickname “Little Boy”. The next bomb that was dropped was an Implosion-type fission bomb nicknamed “Fat Man”. The United States and Soviet Union agreed that in order to use a nuclear weapon many countries would have to agree with it. One country could not decide by themselves. After this many larger countries decided to give up on their nuclear weapon programs because they thought that not everyone would agree to using the weapons. After a while everyone realized that the plan had failed. Another nuclear weapon used in World War II was the Uranium bomb. The Uranium bomb uses the energy released in Uranium-235. The explosive device can be made by positioning two masses of Uranium-235 so they can be forced together so quickly that they will form a critical mass and a rapid, uncontrolled fission chain. Thermonuclear explosions were also used in World War II. These explosions happened in high temperatures. The high temperatures were required to initiate the nuclear fusion reactions. A nuclear fusion reaction is when two or more atomic nuclei collide at a very high speed and form a new type of nucleus. On July 16, 1945, the first ever atomic bomb was tested in the Jamez Mountains in Northern New Mexico, code named “Gadget.” The single weapon ultimately dropped on Hiroshima, nicknamed “Little Boy,” produced the amount of approximately twenty- thousand tons of TNT, which is roughly seven times greater than all of the bombs dropped by all the allies on all of Germany in 1942. The first Japanese City bomb was Hiroshima on August 6, 1945. An American B-29 bomber, named Enola Gay, flown by the pilot Paul W. Tibbets, dropped the “Little Boy” uranium atomic bomb. Three days later a second bomb named ”Fat Boy,” made of plutonium was dropped on the Japanese city of Nagasaki. After being released, it took approximately one minute for Little Boy to reach the point of explosion, which was about 2,000 feet. The impact of the bombs on the cities and people was massive. Black rain containing large amounts of nuclear fallout fell as much as 30km from the original blast site. A mushroom cloud rose to twenty thousand feet in the air, and sixty percent of the city was destroyed. The shock wave and its reverse effect reached speeds close to those of the speed of sound.
