On September 12, 2014, I observed two people; Person A and Person B. The observation took place at Applebee’s, a local restaurant, beginning at 7:21 p.m. and ending observation at 8:06 p.m. I was serving their table for the evening, enabling myself to observe them closely. The restaurant had died down from the dinner rush, leaving them one of three tables in the smoking section, normally filled with eight. Along with the outside light fading, the lighting indoors was dim, making the dining experience feel more quiet and intimate. The background noise was filled with a light roar of other group’s conversations, and a jazz station played quietly from the speakers overhead.
I noticed in the movie, “Signs of Respect,” an example was given where the watcher had to decide which option was the best for confidently involving herself in a conversation with a Deaf group of people. When Amy, the actor, went out to a Silent Dinner, she did not know whether it would be appropriate to say, “Excuse me, may I sit with you?” or to sit across from them and wait for them to notice her signing. Obviously, the correct answer would involve Amy being assertive and simply asking the Deaf people, that she has an interest in joining, if she could join their conversation. That wait can expose you to some very irritating habits of other people. In every waiting room you tend to encounter at least one of these groups of people. You have the cell phone talkers who don’t have a problem sharing their personal business with everyone; you have those pesky kids whose parent seem oblivious to the terror their little ones are causing; and you have those habitual question askers who always take up the time of the receptionist, leaving you to wonder if that is causing your own time to be delayed.
The best solution would be to have smaller classes where personality differences are embraced rather than looked down upon. Teachers could also make reading aloud and participating in groups optional instead of mandatory. This would not only make the quieter students more comfortable, but also enhance their learning experience by forcing them to be accountable for their own work instead of relying on a partner to do it or a classmate to read for them (GCD Team).
For many years, my company had very clear lines of authority, position, and title. Your title determined everything from the type of phone you had, to the size of your office, to the color of your walls. Although the culture of the organization has since changed, I believe this instilled a fear in many lower-level employees of talking in meetings that included higher-level executives.
