Niger is located in Western Africa, between Sahel and the Sahara. Since the Sahara covers sixty-six percent of the country, Niger is one of the driest countries in the world. On the hottest months, from March to June, temperatures can reach up to 122 Fahrenheit. On the other hand, during the night time temperature can drastically drop to below freezing levels. Miles of sand dunes cover northern Niger, but vegetation is almost non-existent. The famous air mountains are located in central Niger. They cover 32,000 sq mi and help support the farming communities with their “berly-there” vegetation. Central Niger has semi-fertile land allowing oases and vegetation to live. Niger’s extreme geography and lack of roads make it difficult for goods to come in and out of the country. The Niger River is currently the best and cheapest trading center (Economy Watch). Niger needs to improve their imports because new machinery is essential for farming production. Although Niger has been a member of WTO since December of 1996, their trading in the last thirty years appears to be unstable. Nevertheless, Niger does has an unexpected, yet larger trading network (OEC). Specifically their imports were increasing, at a slow rate, for the past thirty years, but declined during their 2015-2016 period. Because Niger is one of the poorest countries in the world, it is quite difficult for them to become a competitive trading nation.
Fortunately, Niger’s workforce consists of ninety percent farmers. Therefore, it is possible for Nigerien farmers to specialize on growing specific heat resistant crops. Niger’s dry climate limits the type of crops and food that the country can grow. Accordingly, they need a lot of agriculture strategy.
