This coming February I am hoping to attend the NerdCon Nerdfighteria Convention in Boston. For this privilege, I will be paying $60 for two days of entertainment and excitement. There are many other people from around the globe who will be joining in the experience as well. The value which everyone places on these tickets depends deeply on the social relationships and the connections which are made through shared interest. Like with any fan convention, participants pay money to spend time with like-mined people and to experience first-hand the excitement of being part of a group of people who are all enthusiastic about the same things. YouTube and the internet are most likely the biggest ways that the organizers reach potential attendees, but also, word of mouth and the spread of ideas is important for this kind of event. Many of the people who will be attending are avid watchers of the channels of the presenters at the convention. Others will simply be people who heard about the fantastic amount of nerd culture which will be present in Boston. The social relationships within this kind of event are probably the most pronounced. The whole purpose of conventions is to connect people together who share similar beliefs, interests, and enthusiasms but who would otherwise be unlikely to meet up in the real world. The social relationships which can be made on the internet are constantly evolving and changing, but for this community, the “real world” is where some of the more meaningful interactions take place. Many people have heroes who they never get to meet, but an event like this allows people not only to meet the people they admire, but others who are also enthusiastic about similar things.
