Nelson Mandela’s reign as President of South Africa from May 10, 1994 – June 14, 1999 successfully established him as one of the most prominent men in all of history. Mandela brought in laws of equality and freedom for Black South Africans. This saw him to receive a number of prestigious accolades such as the famous Nobel Peace Prize and the U.S. Presidential Medal of Freedom. However, Mandela’s rise to prominence was not easy, he endured through many obstacles through his life to reign as the first black President of South Africa. Nelson Mandela was seen as a hero among his people.

Nelson Rolihlahla Mandela was born in a tiny village called Mvezo, Transkei, South Africa on July 18, 1918. He was born into a violent system of racist segregation called apartheid. Although he came from a Royal African family, Mandela endured a childhood filled with negative obstacles.
