What do Alex Rodriguez, Tonya Harding, Pete Rose, and Lance Armstrong all have in common? That’s an easy question to answer. They all took anabolic steroids. Steroids have been a drug used by many athletes to enhance performance and get bigger. It’s an important topic of conversation when talking about athletics and performance. When it comes to the topic of steroids, most of us will readily agree that they are bad for the body. People argue whether or not they are truly beneficial in athletics and what affects the drug has on the body. Some people are convinced that they are not worth taking, and that they don’t do as much as some people think. Whereas some people would argue that they are necessary in athletics and are a very beneficial tool, to achieving success. The beginning of the whole debate starts at the core. Strength in steroid users rises, variably from 5-20% while it adds 4.5-11 pounds onto the user 's frame, but it is unknown whether or not that is lean body mass or fat, because fat doesn’t seem to be diminished with use (Hartgens & Kuipers). Even though steroids don’t have a huge affect on brain, they do change up some chemical make up. If someone uses steroids for a long time it can result in affecting the brain and it’s chemicals such as “dopamine, serotonin, and opioid systems” (“Anabolic Steroids”) resulting in a changed behavior and mood. Unfortunately, young athletes think that steroids will make them bigger, but it can do some serious damage, putting a halt on skeletal growth in teens due to high levels of testosterone, as well as increasing calcium, and the size of organs in the body, which is very dangerous. Another big health risk in association with steroid use is the increased chance of a stroke, heart attack, blood clots, infections, HIV, and Aids. Some other impacts on a user 's health
