The issue in the modern day is that students are not scared of being penalized. Children think it is amusing to get into trouble and the teacher gives children the wanted attention by making it a big deal. Rewards are causing students to be unprepared for their future lives, whether it is for high school or for college. They should not be used in the classroom because there are many depressing controversies. It could end the student’s interest in that certain subject and hinder him or her from trying new things. Also,the chance of that rewarded behavior happening in all of the classrooms is pretty slim. Despite the fact that there are positive effects with awards, the negative effects are more prominent. Awards are resulting in uninterested, non-creative, disrespectful students and the consequences only going to get worse in the future. Having a system for managing students’ behavior is important for the students and for the teacher. Students need to be acknowledged when they do something well so they can do it again. Even as adults we sometimes need acknowledgement. I know at my job we are always acknowledged when we get a customer to apply for a credit or debit card. If the students are not being acknowledge for their good deeds they wouldn’t want to try harder to do that same behavior again or even try harder. They need a system that challenges them and lets them know what would happen if they behave well. Having an effective system in place also keeps the teacher prepared for certain situations and with a system in place the students will strive to do well so they can receive the benefits of the system in place.

According to PBS News Hour, even if students receive their rewards, there are moments where their parents take the reward away from them, which would leave them with disappointment. Additionally, let’s say a student put all their hard work for an assignment to get the reward (money) but to find out, they only got a ‘C’ as their grade. The effect of this can simply decrease their motivation for school and leave them in despair. To sum it up, if students were to get paid for grades, it will then again, leave them with frustration for not getting the desired grades or rewards.

Being awarded the class valedictorian is a prestigious honor that only the hardest working student can earn. To become the valedictorian, one must spend countless hours studying and exhausting themselves - things that seem terrible, but are definitely worth the while in the end. Many school systems are now looking into eliminating this award in order to decrease competition and tensions between students. Instead, they are implementing an award given to the top 10 percent of a class in recognition of their academic achievement. With the abolition of one sole valedictorian and the creation of a group of multiple valedictorians, more students will strive for academic success.
Students should be paid for having good grades. According to Psychology Today the United States has fallen behind other nations in education. In addition to this, approximately every one in four students in the U.S. drops out of school before graduation. The main reason for this is that students have little to no motivation. Students are either bored by school, or they are distracted by the other things that go on in their lives such as sports, jobs, friends and their own family life. Although learning has its own rewards, some students respond better to money. This essay explains how students will be paid and the reasons that they should receive money for getting good grades. Some reasons that students should be paid are: if students received rewards for having good grades fewer students would drop out, graduates would be better educated, people would seek higher education, less crime would be committed, less people would rely on the government and graduates would be more qualified for better jobs.
We have to admit that humans often need incentives. For most people, money is a driving force which can inspire them to make progress (Barbieri, 52). If by performing better, you could earn more money, I think most people would gladly perform well and strive to achieve better results. Teachers are also human beings, and the vast majority of them would feel the same. Higher wages can increase the enthusiasm and motivation of teachers. At the same time, merit pay can improve teachers’ motivation, not only because of the money, but also because of a sense of accomplishment (Honawar and Olson, 26-27). When a teacher, through his or her own careful research of teaching strategies, passion, and devotion to teaching, help his or her students get better grades and is also rewarded by the schools, he or she will be filled with a sense of purpose.
