America has always been known as the land of the free and the home of the brave. From the outside looking in, it is a country that is said to boast freedom and opportunity for all. Many fail to realize that the foundation of this country was founded off the anguish of the Native Americans that originally populated America as well as the African Slaves that were forced to suffer for centuries under America’s original settlers. The belief that the United States of America was founded originally as a place of equality and opportunity is simply an untrue ideology. When the colonists came to America, they classified the Native Americans as complete brutal savages. But was that a correct assumption? The Native Americans lived a life that was a complete opposite from the way that the Europeans were accustomed to. The Native Americans believed that the land was shared by everyone and not one person could own it. The Native Americans also had a polytheistic religion which completely went against the beliefs of the colonists. The colonists viewed the Native Americans as savages and barbarians because their ways of living were different.
The clash between the Native Americans and the colonists did not start off tumultuous. In the early days of the exploration and settlement of the New World they lived in peace. The Indians taught them how to farm and live off the land. In a strange land the colonists made an ally. However, the subsequent turn of events was inevitable. Perhaps the chaos that ensued could have been postponed but there was never going to be a peaceful cohabitation between the colonists and the indigenous people. There were so many vast differences between the religious views and ultimate goals of the two groups. The Native Americans had established trade relationships with various tribes, they had their own religions, and their way of life was a stark contrast to that of the colonists. The worldview of the respective peoples was foreign to the other and the idea of a holistic and unbiased approach to the life of others was foreign.
Since the beginning of colonization, America has been controlled by religiously and ethically diverse whites. The most profound cases of racism in the “United” States of America have been felt by Native Americans, Asians, African Americans, Mexican Americans, and Muslims. This type of racism is also known as colorism, the belief that those with lighter, fairer skin are treated with a higher respect than those with darker skin, this issue has been happening for a long time within the African American community. European countries began exploring trade routes in 1500s, and they found the Americans while looking for China and India. They conquered some Native Americans while trying to build homes and colonies in America. The European countries were Spain, France, and England. Spain, France, and England were all similar because they all wanted gold, silver, and other natural resources, but they were also different because some land where they settled was different and they had different interactions with Native Americans.
Cultural competence is a skill essential to acquire for healthcare providers, especially nurses. Cooperating effectively and understanding individuals with different backgrounds and traditions enhances the quality of health care provided by hospitals and other medical facilities. Throughout American history, racial inequalities were created to dehumanize those who were not white. Beginning with the brutal genocide of Native Americans in 1492, leading to forcing millions of Africans, Native Americans and Latinx into slavery, it is clear to see that racial inequalities are deeply rooted in American history. From past to present, America has displayed atrocities and inequalities among the oppressed races. The inequality of races in America has led to an unequal distribution of opportunity, especially cultural equality. However, because of these inequalities people have fought against institutionalized racism and have paved the way for a better future.
Europeans and Native Americans, there are many differences between these two cultures we will be focusing on the differences within their notions of freedom. To compare one must first understand what each cultures idea of freedom really is. European or English freedom focused on the ideal of owning one’s own land and being able to sustain oneself. This ideal might have been a result of England’s poor economy at the time, many citizens were without work and unable to provide for their families. Another staple in English freedom was the freedom to practice one’s desired religion, the church of England restricted any other religion at the time making those who believed otherwise to be suppressed. The magna carta was a document written by King John I in 1215, this charter of liberties granted the English some freedom. Many however, were only granted to the wealthy and those of high status. Although the charter contained clauses such as forty which states “To no one will we sell, to no one deny or delay the right or justice.” (Breay 2002). Many were still suppressed by their lack of wealth and low status. These injustices were an inspiration and founded many of the ideals of English freedom.
Natives Americans are considered to be people whose pre-Columbian ancestors were indigenous to the lands within the nation’s boundaries. African Americans are an ethnic group of Americans with total or partial ancestry from any of the Black racial groups of Africa. Both African Americans as Native Americans spent many difficulties during the formation of the republic; the black community was used as slaves by the owners of the plantations, while American settlers stole the Indian’s land. Another similarity is that both groups faced racial discrimination. But they also have many differences as they history, culture and they role in today’s American society.
America especially, has struggled with reconciling “All men are created equal” with the injustice that has been done in the past, and how injustice still affects us today. Racism begins with a prejudice presupposition that ones racial/ethnic group is of a lower stature than one’s own race. Which justifies the acts of oppression and feelings of superiority, and though America no longer has institutional racism, the system and the aftermath of it are still felt, and propagated today, thus furthering the need for reconciliation.
Diversity, we define this term today as one of our nation’s most dynamic characteristics in American history. The United States thrives through the means of diversity. However, diversity has not always been a positive component in America; in fact, it took many years for our nation to become accustomed to this broad variety of mixed cultures and social groups. One of the leading groups that were most commonly affected by this, were African American citizens, who were victimized because of their color and race. It wasn’t easy being an African American, back then they had to fight in order to achieve where they are today, from slavery and discrimination, there was a very slim chance of hope for freedom or even citizenship. This longing for hope began to shift around the 1950’s during the Civil Rights Movement, where discrimination still took place yet, it is the time when African Americans started to defend their rights and honor to become freemen like every other citizen of the United States. African Americans were beginning to gain recognition after the 14th Amendment was ratified in 1868, which declared all people born natural in the United States and included the slaves that were previously declared free. However, this didn’t prevent the people from disputing against the constitutional law, especially the people in the South who continued to retaliate against African Americans and the idea of integration in white schools. Integration in white schools played a major role in the battle for Civil Rights in the South, upon the coming of independence for all African American people in the United States after a series of tribulations and loss of hope.
A large problem in America has always been racial issues and still continues to be prevalent in our society today. The United States likes to boast its reputation as a “melting-pot” as many cultures, ethnicities, and backgrounds are mixed together, yet the country still continues to isolate individuals based on race. In the constitution, it says that everyone is supposed to have equal rights and liberties, yet after over 200 years, many minorities still struggle to obtain the same respect and equality that their white counterparts have always have. Laws should be created to enforce equality and justice for racial groups.
As stated before, racism has been a major contentious issue in the United States of America.
