For adapting to different situations, our ancients evolved a lot. For example, for the physical adaptation, our ancient put themselves into the group and develop the self-transcendence to help their tribe survive. For psychological adaptation, people learned to read others’ body languages and find out humans’ facial expressions to help them understand unspoken information and prepare their bodies for the fights or escaping. However, for achieving the perfect stages of both adaptations, the religions really helped a lot.

In the early days, the existence of religions is to help a group of people cohesive. Religions include communal dancing, trances, communication with spirits, gods, and dead ancestors. Wade argued that faith instinct developed when people notice that only when they unit, they can survive in the world. Therefore, people prefer to believe in religions. When people share the same beliefs with others, it is easier to feel the connection between each other. For uniting people, the best way is making them believe in the power of supernatural. Religions emphasize on the punishment since they want to tie people by making them fear of something when they against the ideas in the religions. The fear of “divine punishment” caused people to come closer as a tribe and helped them better serve their gods. Dominic Johnson mentioned, “every community possesses a highly effective punishment mechanism in the form of supernatural agents,…the Gods or the spirits of dead ancestors are reputed to be keenly interested in people observance of prevailing laws and taboos” (Pearson, 45) When it relate to the psychological adaptations, self-sacrifice in this part is not as simple as physical sacrifice. For joining in the religions, people need to sacrifice something they liked before to show their devotion or reverence for their religions. For most religious individuals, religions provide belongingness for them. When they participating in the religions behaviors, people gain the sense of belonging, protection and identity.
