From the nerve-racking moment of you and two other girls at tryout getting the most unappealing looks, but no matter how much they give you a blank stare, you have to always smile and never lose eye-contact. We would even put Vaseline on our teeth so we wouldn’t drop our smiles. That is the most awful taste if you closed your mouth. Then one of the veteran cheerleaders, Emmy, would say “Rock with the red and roll with the black.” The two girls and I all clapped and started the cheer. We all spoke in harmony “Hey Eagles, You know what you got to do! You got to rock with the red and roll with the black!” All together we repeated this three times. It helped me burst out my shell and become a performer. From performing in front of my school to performing in front of ninety-thousand people with a few thousand other girls on the field my life changed dramatically. These performances where something totally different than what I was expecting. The experience of performing on a college football field including, Auburn University and Georgia State University, was thrilling. Mrs.Vicki controlled all of us. Mrs.Vicki was the director for these events of cheerleaders performing at halftime of a college game. Vicki would send the teams that signed up for the performance a DVD of the dance. We had a week to learn it and know it from standing to the front, back, left and right. When we arrived at the practice she would change certain counts and add more counts. You had to be a quick learner or you would mess this performance up. We would practice for about four hours. She was very strict and she had eyes like a hawk. She could point out anybody if they were messing up. She would say “40 yard line, 25th girl in the blue uniform you are messing up on the 3rd, 8 count and your motions are sloppy.” She was direct and brutally honest. But I liked that because her name was on this performance and no one will mess this up for her. She would yell at the coaches for talking too loud. Seeing those red, black and white colors come through the sign every Friday night lead by cheerleaders running with flags was thrilling. I despised ever getting the last letter when I was a freshman because if the people in front of you are running slow you might get trampled by a stampede filled with 80 horses. On the field cheering, it felt like I was another person. It was like living a double life. Cheering made my voice heard. Doing those different cheers it felt like every motion, every word, and every smile mattered. It helped the crowd. It helped the boys. It the cheerleading squad. It helped
