Did you know over 510,000 American children are in foster care, 21 percent of children just in Massachusetts were in foster care during the year 2014. They’re removed from their families and homes when they are in a time of crisis. If nothing changes by the year 2020: 22,500 children will die of abuse or neglect before the age of five. More than 10.5 million children will spend a duration in the foster care organization, and 75,000 former youth who’ve grown out of foster care will experience homelessness. At the end of my junior year of high school, I was on cloud 9 entering my senior year, getting my license, going to prom, and other school events. But as they say, everything great comes to an end and on May 4th My mom kicked me out over disagreeing with me on medical care choices. Throughout the next week, authorities and DCF got involved. By May 8th DCF sent me into emergency custody and removed from the family and home I had known and grown comfortable with for 17 years. I had scarcely any clothes or hygiene products. My social worker never once visited me during my time there and I struggled daily with trying to maintain hope. Unfortunately, the house I was in wasn’t up to the health standards that are required to be a foster home. Because of the lack of people willing to become a foster home every time I complained to my social worker I never received a return call or answer. My foster house had a collection of bed bugs and fleas because of the cats they had. Ants ruled the house and left few foods in the house edible and by the end of seven weeks I lost nearly 30 pounds. The father and mother of the house were hoarders and trash, clothing, and random items varnished multiple rooms. I grew more depressed each day I spent in the home, the parents left me home alone and worked daily and I knew of living depleted and
