Leadership, scholarship, diversity, and citizenship are all characteristics that I learned how to appreciate over time. My cultural background is very diverse, I was born in the US, I have roots in Africa, I lived for an extended time in France, and I traveled across Europe and North Africa. Therefore, I grew up in a diverse environment and developed an important skill: Leadership. As I grew up in diverse cultures, I learned to respect different customs and to value different ideas, which allowed me to quickly rise in the ranks of the National Honor Society (NHS) Chapter of DeBakey High School for Health Professions. I was elected as vice-president of NHS in the 11th grade, and because of my hard-work and enthusiasm, I was elected president of NHS for the current year. As the President of NHS, I organized a volunteering campaign with NHS to aid in the shelters following Harvey. I, as a leader, went to help in the NRG center shelter. In the shelter, I organized and passed out clothes to young boys. When doing so, I met children from all races; I listened to their stories while gently folding their clothes. I met two brothers holding each other’s hands while searching for clothes, a view that broke my heart. After I helped them and gave them some comfort, they smiled: the best smile I have ever seen. As I looked around my area, I felt great satisfaction when I saw Houston uniting as one. This showed me the essence of citizenship which is to perform any minimum help to those in need to help society. Moreover, I felt my knowledge of the diverse minds in the world aiding me in efficiently communicating hope to them and touching the guests’ hearts and minds as I respected their various socio-economic
