Since a young age, I’ve always wanted to work in the healthcare field. During high school, I completed a specialization in health and well-being which guided me towards a co-op placement at NEOMO. Once my placement was complete, the physicians expressed how impressed they were with my progress and I was offered a job. Since then, they’ve shown me many hands-on healthcare opportunities, which led me to pursue my bachelor degree in Biomed. A few years back, NEOMO hired their first PA and this is how I first found out about this profession. He was very enthusiastic about his career which peeked my interest to learn more about the roles of a PA in the healthcare field. PA's are trained to provide diagnostic, therapeutic, and preventive health care services, as delegated by a physician. They work with members of a healthcare team, they take medical histories, examine and treat patients, order and interpret laboratory tests and x rays, and make diagnoses. I believe that people everywhere should always have access to adequate medical care. Where you live should not determine whether you live, and the PA profession was created to improve the availability of healthcare in rural and other underserved areas. As a PA, I would be eager to help people have not had access to the care they needed. I want to serve those that need medical attention but don’t have the means to obtain it—whether in rural Michigan, the inner-city of Atlanta, or the backwoods of Arkansas. Already, this experience has facilitated numerous valuable encounters during clinical while setting me apart over other candidates who may be less comfortable in the care setting. Indeed, even as a nursing student, my comfort working with patients and members of the care team has allowed me to materially and positively affect patient care on numerous occasions. Additionally, my first degree in Chemistry gave me the tools and analytical nuance to pursue systematic research. Combined with my nursing education and passion for nursing research, these proficiencies uniquely prepare me to be at the forefront of evidence-based family practice nursing. I know that a graduate degree and research is not the last step. Then again I know that the University of Maryland is the greatest place to start.
Ten years ago I was sitting in a classroom striving to understand the English language and how to read and write properly. I am a Mexican immigrant who came into the United States following the “American Dream” in search of a better life. I am a hard working individual with a passion for service and self-determination to make a difference in people’s lives. I come from a family that values unity and service to others. After speaking with multiple members in the M-HEAL, I have been able to learn that PeriOperative is the premiere opportunity to combine my love for both business and medicine. Professionally, I aim to work in the business side of medical technology or healthcare and the fact that the PeriOperative team allows me to gain exposure to working in the field through an impactful project excites me greatly. I had known for years that I wanted to work in the health care field, but I always believed it would be as a doctor. I watched for the first few years of my brother’s life as he struggled with different health challenges such as being born premature, having croup and breathing difficulty, and speech impairment. Watching my brother struggle and then being able to overcome these difficulties, as well as seeing other children around him who were not as fortunate, really pushed me even at a young age to make a difference. My family, both immediate and extended, were very supportive, and I felt a real positive push towards working hard to achieve that goal of working in health care. Throughout my life, I have worked towards one goal which is to become a doctor. Medicine offers the opportunity for me to integrate different scopes of science while trying to improve human life. Medicine has intrigued me throughout all my life because it??s a never ending mystery and every answer has questions, and vice versa. Upon entering my career, I had assumed that professional and financial success would surely bring personal fulfillment. This realization triggered a process of self-searching that led me to medicine. The commitment to provide others with healthcare is a serious decision for anyone. As I examined my interests and goals, however, I underwent a process of personal growth that has propelled me towards a career as a physician. A career in medicine will allow me to integrate thoroughly my passion for science into a public-service framework. Since childhood, I have loved acquiring scientific knowledge, particularly involving biological processes. During my undergraduate studies, I displayed my ability to juggle competing demands while still maintaining my academic focus; I have succeeded at school while volunteering part time, spending time with family and friends, and working part-time. To better serve my expected patient population, I worked over my English and Korean language skills. I have come to discover that a job and even a good income, without another significant purpose, will not bring satisfaction. After receiving my undergraduate degree in pre-medicine I knew that medicine was in my future, but I was not ready to start my career at that time. Hands on experiences are vital for me because it is how I interpret the world around me. So I became a volunteer firefighter/ EMT-b and then worked as an operating room aide at Bozeman Deaconess Hospital.
