Behavior & Leadership: Potential Impact on NBA Player Performance
The National Basketball Association (NBA) which began in the 1940’s is a men’s professional basketball sports league comprised of 32 teams of which the majority are based in cities of the United States; with one team based in Canada. The league has changed drastically since it began many years ago and has grown to become a global entertainment business. The main purpose(s) of the existence of these teams is for the entertainment of its millions and millions of fans to enjoy and also for the owners of the teams to profit from the talents and abilities of the players whom are directly responsible for the sport’s revenue based on the fan spending from things such as ticket sales, concessions, NBA gear, and revenue from television programming. Player salaries have increased by leaps and bounds and all the teams as a whole generate billions in revenue every year.
My interest or role in this organization is of course; simply that of a fan of the sport of basketball and of the league itself. I have been a fan since my childhood and since I could understand the sport. My love for the sport grew even stronger when I became old enough to play myself. As a fan I would like to have a better understanding of some of the factors that make the league such a popular sport and also explore some of the issues that affect the league’s popularity and create negativity.
Some of the main issues that I think face the league today are team competitiveness, personnel attitudes to include the players, coaches, owners, and management, and some league rules. I think many players have become spoiled and I think that it is due in part to the money they make and many extreme fans and...

...nsure my educational development leads to the outcomes that I expect or achieve all that I can from my experiences. Professionally, I feel that I will be able to use what I have learned from completing this assignment to be a better leader and manager because I think a leader has to be able to read people to know how to get them to perform at their best. Essentially figuring out how to best provide them with what they need to motivate themselves to perform better or at their peak level. This will be an important tool going forward in my goal to become a successful entrepreneur in the near future. Over all I will say that completing this assignment has helped me realize that I can more objective in my thinking process and still be successful in reaching my goals; whatever they may be and I do not have to let my personal biases stand in the way of my development.

In the 1970s, the worlds of professional sports took a drastic turn. According to an article by J.L. Carnagie, “Two words described sports in the 1970s: big business. Owners and athletes in major professional team sports knew there was money to be made in their games, and they went after it.” (Carnagie, n.d.) Athletes, especially, realized how competitive teams were becoming, and they were well aware that talent was in high demand. In the beginning of 1980s, the best athletes were demanding even more money; and the majority of the time, they got what they wanted. By end of the 1980s, many athletes were making over a million dollars (Carnagie, n.d.) These increasing salaries were very ironic because when professional sports began they were intended to be a showcase of players’ talent and athletic ability. Professional sports leagues were also supposed to be similar to the Olympics in that they would be free of politics and influence of society. However, by the 80s, they had become all about the star athletes and how much money they could make.
