As I received my essay today I noticed some strengths and weaknesses in my writing. Some of the things I really need to improve on are writing in present tense and having an active voice, revising my work better and to write in an MLA format. These skills are very important as I will need them all throughout my life. Three strategies I would like to use to improve my writing are revising with the teacher beforehand, use a thesaurus to make better word choices and to practice writing in an active voice. These strategies will help me a lot as they focus on the errors I make in my writing. Revising with the teacher beforehand will help me a lot as I can easily get feedback on my essay before I hand it in. Showing it to the teacher will also allow
The strategies that I will use in my final draft are making sure my writing is in the third person, double check my in-text citing format as well as double check the wording to make sure I am using the correct words and grammar. I really appreciate the instructor’s feedback from this essay and the reflection. Sometimes we are our own worst critic and after I read my work several times, I still do not feel confident in my abilities. However, every time I get a feedback from the professor. I am more and more confident, that I made the right choice to go back to school and that, I will be successful in my new chapter. I chose these strategies in order for my paper to be accurate and completed. As of now, I think I am getting the hang of it and
Weak skills that I began the class with have become strong and my strong skills have become stronger. Having the opportunity to write a variety of different essay styles has challenged me greatly to improve my writing techniques. Each essay I was required to write brought its own struggles for me. I had to draw on the information that was presented through the class as well as look to the textbook for guidance. To ensure I did well on each essay I thought about my topic, researched the topic, then began to outline what I wanted to write about. Finally, I would write the essay and submit a rough draft. English 102 has given me the skills and training I need to move on to other classes next semester that will require writing essays. I now have a confidence in my writing abilities that this class has given
Throughout the years in middle school and high school I 've had to write many essays. Every time I walked into class and on the board it said "Essay" the anxiety attacked. Writing essays was never my favorite thing to do and im pretty sure many people feel the same way. My last teacher said he liked the creativity I had in my writing the only thing missing was knowing how to writing correctly. No writer is born knowing how to write perfectly they all had to learn and that’s what I 'm doing except what they learned stuck to them. The obvious strength I have in writing is that it isn 't math. But being serious now two good strengths in writing that I have are creativity and the energy to want to write. The one weakness that hopefully is common is that I just don’t know how to put all of this together. My strengths and weaknesses make want to become a better writer hopefully this class will help. I 've never been a good writer but then again not everyone is, my strengths push me and weaknesses pull me back but only with practice and help will the weaknesses be vanished.
I believe that as a writer I’ve always been a free writer, in the sense that I love writing without thinking about the ramifications of grammar and spelling. Although free writing is fun, I believe it is my strength because I can most likely write about a subject for multiple pages without any research by just using my own thoughts and opinions. Consequently, this type of writing has also been my downfall in essays and other writing assignments because of the mandatory rules that I fail to remember. In writing assignments, since I normally write off of what comes to mind my writing seems to carry many vague generalizations due to the lack of research that I do on the subject. When it comes to grammar I feel that it is easy for me to get
There are several ways in which my writing skills has improved when responding to the literature in this semester. Although, there are also some things that I still need to improve on as well. One aspect of writing that I have struggled with is being able to form a coherent thesis statement and also being able to support it with examples from the text. In my writing I still sometimes tend to make grammatical errors as well. I excelled at being able to incorporate the underlying themes and symbols within the reading material for this course into my writing. There were many expectations I had about reading and writing when coming into this course. My primary expectation for this course was to improve both my reading and writing skills. This expectation
My passion for the fascinating wolrd of science literally can not be put into words. Since receiving my first home science kit at five years of age the way things work and why has always been at the forefront of my mind. During my early years I would find great delight in examining anything I could fit under the lens of my telescope. I will never forget my first look at the intricate detail of a human hair.
With these weaknesses, I focused during class activities to refine my writing skills. There were several class activities we carried out to help with our writing skills. First, we started the semester off by writing an opinion essay over a book we read during the summer. Once we wrote our first draft, we
As a very nervous first year student at Westfield State, I went into English 101 lacking confidence in my writing. I Knew I would have struggles and there would be bumps in the road with my writing but I am very eager to learn and become the best writer I can be to help my academic success and become a higher level thinker, what I took from English 101 one was expressing my voice was very key and sentence structure can give your essay a much better feel, knowing what I do know about research aspect of writing is second to none, but I’m not trying to profess just what I have improved, my thesis statements are very weak and I lack organization skills but with the want to become a better writer and trusting the writing process journey I’m on I now I will conquer these task.
Throughout this English 280 course I have learned many things about reading, writing, research, and critical thinking. I have also learned about what potentials I have as a writer and what I can improve when writing. In this process I had also encountered some difficulties when it came to writing. At the same time I also feel that the difficulties I encountered have made me improve from my first essay to my recent essay when it came to the genre, process of writing and the rhetorical language used when writing. Even though my progress was not at all constant I still was able to earned satisfactory grades and learn more with each assignment. I still feel that I need to improve my writing and reading because I will need to use it for future courses, life events and career.
Improving my communication skills has been a work in progress starting back in the early years of my life. I have always been my own worse critic. Usually beating myself down through interpersonal communication. Now as an adult I have made great improvements but still have trouble dealing with perception and self-image. Not being raised in an environment of positive reinforcement and poor communication in the workplace I have made it a point to change that trait in my own family and professional environment.
My parents always tell me how proud they are of me and all i’ve accomplished in my life at such a young age. I’ve always been known as the “responsible one”, or the “smart one” out of all my friends. I’ve always been the one to remind my friends about tests or reports that are due, and they always ask what they would do without me.
“You always say ‘it’s fine’ whenever I ask you if everything is okay,” my boss said to me, one summer Sunday in the middle of the brunch rush, that was typical in the small, family owned restaurant that I had waited tables at for the past 3 years. “If it’s not fine, you just have to say something and we can get you some help.”
When speaking of the topic of who a person is and their past, a massive part of this includes their educational background. Isn’t this what forms people, their education? Of course, this doesn’t always have to refer to their organized education. Everything that a person learns is something that educates them; these words being synonymous. Even something like first learning to tie your shoes is a part of your education. Which method works better for you: loop, swoop, and pull, or bunny ears? I of course, like any other well educated person, use loop, swoop, and pull; it’s just the best way, no bias has ever developed there.
Throughout the year in Pre-AP English Literature I have learned a lot of information on the writing process. Through various writing assignments, I have learned to identify my strengths and weaknesses by reviewing my essays and writing reflections to look back on my improvements and my accomplishments. These perennial writing experiences I have done in class, as well as outside of class, have develop my writing skills tremendously by focusing on the pattern of the CEW structure, along with a clear, precise thesis that helps create a main idea and theme to follow while writing. Although, I feel my writing has gotten better, I feel there are a lot of improvements to be made that can help me reach the next level in my senior English class as well
Having not studies for ten years, I knew there were several areas in my academic writing that needed to be improved. After receiving feedback from ‘Writer’s Diet’ on my submission on ‘why teachers should be effective communicators’ (See Appendix 1) was extremely helpful on the specific points I should be focussing on when writing an academic paper; therefore hopefully improve and achieve a clearer and concise piece of writing to readers. Other resources I used to gain feedback on areas to improve on were from www.grammarbase.com for my lack of comma usage. My other weakness is not thoroughly proof-reading my assignment before submitting. I am aware now which areas that I need to improve on and hopefully achieve improvement.
