I value kindness, knowledge, and perseverance. Despite having originated in different ways, each of these values profoundly impact my everyday thoughts and actions. I drew a flower at the centre of my mandala to aesthetically connect and symbolize all three traits. I highly value perseverance. Although I have admired the trait in others from a young age, I only made a conscious effort to cultivate it in myself upon entering the tenth grade. I was motivated to do so by a desire for personal success, particularly in my studies. I was also influenced by witnessing the efforts of those around me, especially those of my foster parents at the time. To me, kindness is comprised of empathy, acceptance, and altruism. It is important for people to respect and accept one another, regardless of any differences between them. For me, this value developed subconsciously. I was raised to be polite to and caring of everyone around me, and the people around me were very diverse indeed. My father is half African-American and my mother is French. My older sister has cerebral palsy. A few people who were close to me suffered from both mental health and addiction problems. All of these factors, after much personal reflection and introspection, made me more open to understanding and empathizing with others. On top of this, I have had the privilege of making friends from various cultures and religions. I genuinely like people, and celebrate our diversity. Patti Rager Zuzelo of Drexel University, Philadelphia, stresses the importance of “gentleness, compassion, and kindheartedness” in nursing practice (Rager Zuzelo, 2016). Amicable nurses are essential to the wellbeing of patients and their families, as well as the healthcare team as a whole. The value that I place on kindness will support success throughout my nursing career by (hopefully) keeping those around me in good spirits. In my experience, kindness promotes cohesiveness and cooperation in almost all group settings. Kindness is an important characteristic in nurses, as they are in direct contact with others very often. I symbolized this kindness in my mandala with a pink flower. I feel as though pink is a friendly and nurturing colour, and that it is often associated with love (especially on Valentine’s Day). I also find that flowers tend to make most people happy, much like how being treated kindly does. Finally, I drew people around the entirety of my mandala, to symbolize who my kindness will be directed toward throughout my nursing
