MyTeaching Philosophy

In entering the teaching profession, I have thought about why I want to become a teacher. Having tried several different career majors and taken a few years off from college to travel, trying different career paths, I was reminded of how I loved to be around children. As the oldest of eleven grandchildren, I had the privilege of helping younger children learn things that I have already experienced, and I have enjoyed these opportunities. Also I want to be like my Grandmother, who was an elementary music teacher. The opportunity to have her as a teacher for five years in the school system and then as an influence at home was a wonderful and cherished experience. Although she has now been retired for ten or more years, she is still well loved by past students and faculty members. I hope to emulate her by becoming the best teacher I possibly can be. Helping students’ shape their young lives so they can one day become the best in the profession they choose.

I have different views on the teaching profession. I believe children deserve a chance, no matter what type of ethnic background, home life, or social class they come from. All of these factors will play a part in the way they will act, learn and intermingle in and out of a classroom. I agree with John Dewy when he said, “that the United Sates would become a nation of “humanism, compassion, and equality”(p188). I would like to pass on to my students these ideas and concepts.

In my desire to teach elementary students, I feel that at this stage of a child’s life they are becoming their own person with their own thoughts and ideas. Although they still need guidance, their interests and learning styles are well defined. I intend to make the learning process fun, challenging, and exciting. As the students leave my class, I hope to have passed on the idea that learning is beneficial. I want my students to continue to engage themselves in learning because they want to not because someone is standing over their shoulder. I believe the more a person knows the more they can grow.
