How My Love for Volleyball Changed Me Volleyball is a different kind of sport in comparison to all the others that can be more aggressive. There tends to be a lot of pressure on a person. When that ball comes over that net, you do all you can to not be the one to lose a point for your team. It seems like an individual sport to outsiders but in reality it is very team driven. Once the ball is on your teams’ side, you have three touches to get it back over the net. The team has to move as one and work for the same goal. The highs outweighed the lows most of the time. One of my favorite memories from playing in high school was at this one tournament. We knew going into it that we were probably not going to win it. In fact, we lost almost every game in that tournament. It was the last game in the tournament; we had to play one of the toughest teams in our conference. We all knew it was not going to be a pretty game by no means. Since it was the last game in the tournament we decided to just have fun and not get to down on ourselves. In the first match, we were actually playing well and keeping up with the other team. Before you knew it, we were actually beating them. My whole team was completely surprised. By the end of the first match, we confused everyone and won it. It was the best feeling an athlete could have. The second match came along and the other team stepped up their game. This match was a hard one to win. We ended up losing that match and had to play the third and final match. It was a very stressful moment for our team since we have never been put in this situation before. We focused on what we needed to do and we all played to our best ability. It was tied at the last point and the winner needed to win by two points. After a very long and stressful two points we ended up winning. That was the best feeling I had playing volleyball. It took me a while but I soon figured out that I had a team to back me up. The skill that got me to realize this was team building. Team building was one technique my coach and other teams used to ensure the members work together to achieve their goal to win the set. One of my favorite times during my high school volleyball career was the team bonding activities we did such as sleepovers, going out to eat, or just hanging out. This allowed me to understand some of these girls on a deeper level instead of just what they had to offer on the court. That better understanding I had for these girls, allowed for a better relationship with them on the court. Soon our team turned into a family and we encouraged each other to push our limits on the court. I don’t think our team would have been as successful as we were if we didn’t do the team bonding
