The most influential person in my life is my father because of how he has taught me everything I know and has shaped me into the person I am today. My father is from the Dominican Republic and has 5 sisters and 4 brothers, so with such a large family, it is hard to earn enough money to buy food for everyone and is even hard to earn enough money to buy any food at all. He grew up in a very poor family and hardly ever had any food to eat, but he always worked hard to try and find any food to bring for his family. He had a hard life, but when my father was 15 years old, his family was able to leave the Dominican Republic and come to the United States. Once he came back home, he decided to go to a trade school in New York to study electrical engineering, but he never got his degree from college because he left school after a year. After that, he worked at a lab for a couple of years, met my mother, got married and had two children. He has used every hard aspect of his life to teach me how to be a better person and to work hard. He grew up in a poor family, so he taught me to value everything I have and to never take what I have for granted because there are people in the world that don’t have any food on the table and have much less than I do. In high school, he was a good student, so he taught me to always do my best in school and to never take my education for granted because there are people in the world that aren’t able to go to school. Most importantly, he has used the fact that he dropped out of school and gave up on going to college to teach me to value all my hard work and taught me how important going to college is. He uses this to prove to me how important a college education is and to show me to never give up on something just because it is too hard or too much work. Every lesson I have learned in life, I have learned from my father. When I was a kid, a boy was being mean to me and when I told my dad this, he told me to never act weak around someone who is trying to bring you down and to always hold my head up high. When I was a kid, I had a friend who wasn’t a good influence on me and when my dad saw this, he made me really how bad of a friend this person was to me and showed me that I shouldn’t be friends with a person like that. Whenever my temper gets the best of me, my dad is always there to give me a reality check and helps me calm down and smile again. My dad taught me to always be kind to others, to never judge someone just because they may be different from us, to love others with all your heart and to be compassionate of others around you.
