My Classroom Management Plan

A well-managed classroom requires organization and planning.

There is nothing more frustrating than a room where you can’t find anything and are unsure of your boundaries. Classroom management begins even before the students enter the classroom on the first day. In order to establish the proper work environment students should have an assignment waiting on their desks as soon as they enter the room. In my case this will be some sort of a tell me about yourself and what you think about science activity. In addition teachers should greet their students at the door with directions for seating and instruction to alleviate some of the confusion that usually plagues classrooms on the first day. It doesn’t matter if teachers have assigned seats or if students can choose where they sit. Students just need the official directions. However, the planning must continue past the first day. When planning activities and labs teachers must account for and develop solutions for possible management issues.

A well-managed classroom requires consistency.

Establishing rules, boundaries, and consequences in the classroom will be fruitless if there is no consistency. Once the rules and consequences are established is imperative to follow them every time with everystudent that breaks a rule. When you have a student that does not frequently misbehave it is tempting to go easier on the student and let their one misbehavior slide by. The problem is that news travels fast and students will complain that you are unfair. Favoritism can destroy the respect between students and their teacher.

A well-managed classroom requires the sharing of responsibility.

I remember the classrooms of my past where the ...

... middle of paper ...

...t require a reminder.

2nd behavior offense-See the teacher after class

Rationale: Gives student a chance to defend themselves for disregarding the rule a second time.

3rd behavior offense-Draft a behavior contract and call home to parent

4th behavior offense-Trip to guidance or the administrator’s office

Steps may be skipped depending on the severity of the offense. In addition, broken school rules will follow school consequences.

While at BMS I witnessed a system of dealing with tardiness and unfinished homework, in my future teaching I hope to enact a similar Tardy and Doggie Sheet system. Three tardy marks will translate into Cinderella duty, which is staying after-school to clean up, etc. in the classroom. In addition, the Doggie Sheet system is a great way to keep record of what students are not doing with their explanation and signature on it.
