My Path To Becoming A Police Officer

My background and work experience is not your typical path to being a HR practitioner/leader. When I think of a person that is looking to end up with a human resource career, I picture a person that is calm, organized, reserved, responsible, and generally not a risk taker. My life up to this point has been quite the opposite. Growing up my mother and father taught me that you have to work for everything that you want and nothing will be handed to you. Skipping ahead to my college days I knew that I wanted to be one thing only, a police officer. I was able to take some college classes and decided the best path to being a police officer included joining the military. I knew that the education benefits were great and would help me afford college tuition and expenses. After 3 years I was medically retired from the US Air Force. I had lost the motivation that I one had to be a police officer and decided to pursue my business degree. After attending college for some time, I noticed that my sister-in-law loved her job and made a decent wage. I started to research what she did, and as it turned out, I had changed over the years. I believe that this is a crucial competency because we in the human resource profession will face situations that need a professional that can step in and handle the stresses that people are facing. You will have to be able to make a decision that can affect others livelihoods, and having a calming effect while controlling your own stresses are crucial to a successful outcome. We will be yelled at, called names, pushed to be able to make a decision, and also take certain sides depending on how it will affect the business. This will take top notch stress
