The time that I recall when I first began to read was when I was two years old and my mom started teaching me a lot before I went into kindergarten. The main types of readings I do are magazines, research articles, and when I get assigned to read a novel for a class. I would describe myself as a reader that once I start reading a book, I find myself not being able to stop because I want to know what will happen next. A moment that encapsulates who I am as a reader is when I read a novel that I chose for a class to do a book report on and found myself reading it for over an hour because I was in such suspense. In college, I realized that there is a large amount of reading that had to be done in a short amount of time unlike high school. There are also a great deal of book reports and essays that have to be done. Until I got into college, I have never completed a book report. I never realized that there was so much work that had to go into writing an essay or book report. There are so many steps, such as drafting and revising it repeatedly to get the grade you want. Since I was never a person that liked to read, I had a difficult time even picking up the book and starting to read it. It was difficult for me to focus on reading because it was not a book that I would have picked up on my own time. I had literally judged a book by its cover. I soon faced reality last minute and realized that if I did not read the book, I would of not of received the grade I wanted. I started to read the book and soon found myself not wanting to stop because I wanted to know what was going to happen next. I no longer procrastinate reading the book because the only one I am hurting is myself. From that point on, I realized that I just need to read the book because it needs to get done and nobody else is going to do it for me. Now whenever I get assigned to read a novel and a book report, I just complete it with no problem. It took my moment of recognition to see that there is no more time for messing around
My parents have always stressed the importance of reading. Throughout my whole life, they have motivated me to read and they have encouraged me to find books that I find interesting to read. Because of their encouragement, I am an avid reader today. When I was a child, just starting to enjoy reading I liked to read books that were fiction. Some of my favorite books to read as a child are series that I still love today and I think I still have every book in each series stored in my attic. They are The Boxcar Children, Junie B. Jones, and The Magic Tree House.
My whole life I have never been the greatest at reading, but I have always tried to improve and push myself to do better. Reading and writing areis twoone of the needs of daily life. With that being said, you can conclude that I have always struggled. My problem was I always read too fast through the books or writing prompts, and I never remembered what I had read. But, with help I overcame my problems and started getting better at reading and writing.
Who am I as a reader? I think of myself as an average reader. I first began to read, when in elementary when the English teachers, told us we had to read a book, and from there, I began to read books. I didn’t really like to read books, but we were told to do so. The book which I had to read in elementary school, were not bad for a little child to read. The books could have been better, as of now all the elementary books are good in some certain circumstances.
Throughout my childhood I was never very good at reading. It was something I always struggled with and I grew to not like reading because of this. As a child my mom and dad would read books to me before I went to bed and I always enjoyed looking at the pictures and listening. Then, as I got older my mom would have me begin to read with her out loud. I did not like this because I was not a good reader and I would get so frustrated. During this time I would struggle greatly with reading the pages fluently, I also would mix up some of the letters at times. I also struggled with comprehension, as I got older. It was finally time to head to gym class in the afternoon where we were instructed to take part of a physical test. This test would determine how fit or unfit we are based on a system that was implemented by those with greater authority, on which concluded that it was on such a scale society should be based on. So it was that afternoon that I preformed the tasks that were instructed on to me and my peers. I was able to completed them to my utmost potential which can be consider to be something not so distinctive. My literacy skills began to develop much like Deborah Brandt suggests in her article of “Sponsors of literacy” My first memories of learning to write are still quite vivid. I remember holding a big fat crayon in my hand as my mother showed me how to write my name. She would draw a large line on the page and I would copy her movements. We started with capital letters and moved on to lower case letters. My memories of learning to read are similar. I remember my mother reading me picture books with large print that somehow turned in to reading sentences. Most of my early memories of learning to read and write include sitting with my mother, older sister and brothers. I had never really thought about the influence your family has on your reading
The story of my history as a writer is a very long one. My writing has come full circle. I have changed very much throughout the years, both as I grew older and as I discovered more aspects of my own personality. The growth that I see when I look back is incredible, and it all seems to revolve around my emotions. I have always been a very emotional girl who feels things keenly. All of my truly memorable writing, looking back, has come from experiences that struck a chord with my developing self. This assignment has opened my eyes, despite my initial difficulty in writing it. When I was asked to write down my earliest memory of writing, at first I drew a blank. All of a sudden, it became very clear to me, probably because it had some childhood trauma associated with it.
My first experience to literacy came as a young adult. I have always been reluctant with my education, because of the family problems I experienced growing up. The harsh treatment our family received growing up made it very difficult to study in school, my body was physically in class but my mind was not. The trials and tribulations I went through growing up as a kid continued throughout my teenage years. Dropping out of high school I believe brought upon literacy difficulty. At the age of twenty-three, I finally had enough of feeling undereducated. Living in my mother’s basement with no job and an 8th grade education, the walls started to close in on me as my frustration became greater by the minute.
A challenge I was facing in first semester was completing my assignments on time. This was a challenge for me because I always tried to complete the homework at the last minute, like assigned chapters we had to read from the novel To Kill A Mockingbird, and I wouldn’t make enough time to complete the work. This was a challenge for me because I don’t normally read in my free time. Another confrontation I had was completing final drafts on the computer. I had trouble finishing these assignments also because I wouldn’t make enough time for the work, like the final draft we had to complete from the novel To Kill A Mockingbird.
Literacy is defined as the ability to read and write, and most people believe just that – that literacy only goes as far as being able to read and write words, and up until my enrollment in English 1100 this semester, I too, for the most part, had that belief. As a child, I began my journey through literacy by first memorizing the alphabet, then learning to attach a name to the shape of the letter, and finally assigning a sound to each letter. When phonics was mastered, I then took the next step into reading and writing, by learning to mix letters to create words, use words to develop sentences, and take those sentences to construct paragraphs. I read voraciously as a child. I grew up in a college town and spent my summers in Middlebury, Vt, where my father taught summer school. That meant I was surrounded by libraries and by people who love to read and discuss literature. During the Vermont summers, one of my favorite places was Middlebury College's rare books room where I read first-edition Louisa May Alcott novels.
There are many different types of events that shape who we are as writers and how we view literacy. Reading and writing is viewed as a chore among a number of people because of bad experiences they had when they were first starting to read and write. In my experience reading and writing has always been something to rejoice, not renounce, and that is because I have had positive memories about them.
I also remember as young girl learning how to read and my favorite book that I could quote word for word was “Green Eggs and Ham” by Dr.Suess. I loved that book so much I still have that today. As I got older my love for reading and books started to diminish, I went to a private school for my elementary years and their curriculum was very intense. It was required to read a book from their approved list and complete a book report each summer before the school year began. Not to mention the numerous books reports I would have to complete during the school. At an early age books and reading was something I had to do and not what I wanted to do.
