For this assignment we were asked to review a movie. I choose to analyze the movie Fried Green Tomatoes from 1991. This movie has many lessons hidden inside, but also has a story of a story. It starts off with a woman named Evelyn Couch going to visit her husband’s bitter aunt, and turns into the daily visits to another member of that house. This woman’s name is Ninny Threadgood, and she always has wonderful stories to tell Evelyn. At first, she seems unsure of this elderly woman’s presence, but opens up quickly. These two ladies have a connection, and Evelynn’s prospective of life soon changes. Ninny tells her stories all along, but in the end it reveals that Ninny was really talking about her life in the past. Evelyn was going through a rough patch in her life, and visiting this woman was all she needed to make some changes. Friendship is one of the main ideas throughout this movie. Fried Green Tomatoes shows the importance friendship has on life. Social exchange theory shows that personal relationships feel most satisfying with both participants contribute equally. Ruth and Idgie shared a true bond of friendship, and that kept Idgie alive for many years to come. They would of done anything for each other, and this a true example of the exchange theory. The friendship that Ninny and Evelyn start is also a great example of the exchange theory. Another funny quote from the movie is, “Face it girls. I’m older and have more insurance.” Evelyn says this as she runs straight into a car on purpose three or four times to the owner. She didn’t mean this literally in the movie, but I could see how it relates to our class. Older adults who are 65 or older typically do have better insurance or receive benefits from Medicare or social security. The older you are, the more likely you are to get support and
