Dear John was the basic love story with twist and turns. The book started off with a foolish fellow named John Tyree. He had a harder life then others growing up. His mother died when he was young and his father was far from the norm. John became reckless and out of control and that’s when he knew he had to enlist himself in the army. John returned home on leave the summer of 2000. He loved to surf waves and for him this was a relaxing hobby. One day he was relaxing on the pier, when a ladies purse was knocked into the ocean and he jumped off to retrieve it for her. When returning the purse, he soon fell in love with Savannah Lynn Curtis. This was the start of their endless love story. The book and the movie both portray this love story as
Setting: Dear John had the same setting when it came to the book and the movie. It started off with John living at home with his father in Wilmington, North Carolina. Then lead you to when john had to retreat back to Germany. The time frame stayed consistent starting off in the 2000’s and then ended in 2006. There were distinct details in the movie that set the setting off, like the way they dressed. The actors were placed in time appropriate clothing. The producer opted to put Savannah in elegant dresses and bathing suits that fight that time period. Another thing that set off the setting in bother the movie and the text was the fact that 9/11 happened. In prior history we all are award of the tragedy on September 9, 2001. To me the movie and the book projected the time period and the setting the same they tried to work together to try and engage the reader and viewer of their prior
The first time that the director cued the audience was then he was on the bus ride back to the airport waiting to take the flight back to Germany. The second time we were hinted at the setting was when the men in the squad were facing the camera and then you could imagine they were watching a tv. In the back ground you could hear a man expressing this fear on the news about the 9/11 attack. You could tell that the men were in a different time frame and that that there was going to be a plot twist to the plans originally professed. Like with the 9/11 attack, John’s plan was the get out of there and then be able to live with Savannah and now since the incident happened the story line would change
The movie Bernie is true story of a murder committed in Carthage, Texas in 1996. What set this crime apart from other murders was the reaction of the citizens. Bernie Tiede shot and killed Marjorie Nugent in November 1996. The people of Carthage were more worried about Bernie’s fate than his act of murdering Marjorie.
The first thing we see is Christian Bale’s almost surreal beer belly, similar to an overdue pregnant stomach. He stands in front of a mirror and adjusting one of the most complex comb overs I have ever seen, which includes artful interweaving of glued hair extensions. Add to this a pair of smoked colored pilot glasses and a sophisticated outfit that screams out our worst nightmares of the late 1970s, and it is dangerously tempting to expect a continuation of a hard groomed freak show, populated by thoroughly ridiculous people who make and says ridiculous things. Incohesive, long, and dialogue-heavy, Inherent Vice has all the potential to flounder. Yet under the steady (or rather, wild) hands of director Paul Thomas Anderson, the film becomes a psychedelic, incredibly enjoyable ride brimming with wit and melancholy. Gone with the Wind is a classic fictional love story that depicts life in the old south before, during and after the Civil war. The book was originally written in 1936 by Margret Mitchell, the movie adaptation was released in 1939, directed by Victor Fleming, and staring Clark Gable and Vivian Leigh. Ms. Mitchell grew up listening to Civil war stories from confederate veterans. It was reported that they told her everything; everything that is, except that they had lost the war, she found that out when she was 10 years old. Though the book was written 71 years after the Civil War ended, Ms. Mitchell did her research and appears to have drawn inspiration from those childhood stories that she was told. This is apparent in the detailed description of the clothing, houses, and everyday discussions and interactions of the characters throughout the book. Though not all historically correct most of what is in the book is accurate. During the time the movie was released, “damn” was considered to be vulgar and controversial and they used the term “darkies” to describe the slaves.
"The Breakfast Club" begins with an old dramatic standby. You isolate a group of people in a room, you have them talk, and eventually they exchange truths about themselves and come to new understandings. William Saroyan and Eugene O'Neill have been here before, but they used saloons and drunks. "The Breakfast Club" uses a high school library and five teenage kids.
The movie Doubt is set in a private Catholic School in 1960s. Sister Aloysius is the principal of the school, and Father Flynn is the clergyman in the church. While the movie deals with some moral dilemmas such as doubt versus certainty, rigidity versus openness and so on, the central theme of the story pivots on accusation on Father Flynn of child molestation. The story has a hanging ending where Father Flynn is proven neither guilty nor proven innocent. Based on the contents of the movie and my own analysis, I believe that certainty plays a bigger role in accusations and I believe that Father Flynn had been falsely blamed and I am also against the rigidity of the society.
The Bad and The Beautiful (1952) and State and Main (2000) are films within films that unmask Hollywood Cinema as a dream factory and expose the grotesque, veneer hidden by the luxury of stars. The Bad and the Beautiful, directed by Vincent Minnelli, is a black and white film narrated in flashback form. The films theatrical nature requires more close-ups than wide-screen shots to capture the character’s psychological turmoil. For example, Fred and Jonathan’s car ride is captured in a close-up to signify their friendship; however their relationship deteriorates after Jonathan’s deceit. G.I. Jane, a film by Ridley Scott, tells the story of Jordan O’Neill, a female Lieutenant, handpicked to be the test subject for a new full gender integrated service in the Navy Seals Cross Reconnaissance Team. O’Neill is given the assignment but not expected to succeed. Historically, more than 60% percent of men dropout in training due to its grueling inhuman regime. Previously, O’Neill had tried enlisting into the military service during a time of war, but had been denied due to the “lack of female restroom onboard the submarine”. The sexist experience she encountered fueled her to accept the Navy Seals recruitment and vowed to complete it no matter what rigorous training it entailed. O’Neill saw this as her chance to change the discriminating policies of the navy when dealing with woman in service. She was driven to prove everyone wrong and become a female Navy Seals.
6. "Deterrence is the art of producing, in the mind of the enemy, the fear to attack." -Dr. Strangelove. Deterrence in the film was the fear of the consequences of the nuclear attacks. It's significant because it encompasses idea of the Cold War.
He grew up in this small town and knew he would live there forever. He knew every landmark in this area. This place is where he grew up and experienced many adventures. The new journey of his life was exciting, but then he also had a sick feeling in the pit of his stomach of something not right. Three weeks ago John, twenty-four years old, finished his fourth semester of college.
Love is portrayed as effortless, and is a natural, rewarding, and mutual ... ... middle of paper ... ... uld not have been so profoundly shaken by Mary's relationship with James. John was so upset by their relationship that selfishness consumed him: he did not consider his family when murdering and committing suicide. His own needs became his priority.
For my final essay, I have chosen the movie “Fatal Attraction”, and I will focus on Alex Forrest and her mental disorder. Borderline Personality was displayed in the movie and Alex had almost every symptom of this disorder. Throughout this essay, I will be discussing Alex’s characteristics, intelligence, motivation, stress, social influences and/ or personality theories, treatment, and if the depiction of the disorder and treatment is consistent with what was discussed and read in the course.
The Prestige is a movie about magicians that turn into enemies when a magician’s wife dies in an accident on stage. Angier’s wife dies when she is doing a trick with him and another magician Borden. Borden is possibly the one that caused her death depending on the kind of knot he tied for the trick. Throughout the movie we see several different parts of what we have seen or read in the recent chapters. Anywhere from love and attraction to aggression to the law; this movie seemed to have it all.
“The Help” is a white mock feel good movie, which seems to feature amnesia of racial conflicts in the South as its primary theme (Stockett, 2009). Author Natasha McLaughlin suggests that ‘The Help’ focuses upon the home and the relationship between African-American domestics and the laws of Jim Crow’s neglected ‘other half’: Jane Crow (McLaughlin, 2014). The American Civil Rights Movement mainly accommodates the public with a view concentrated upon a male dominant perspective but appreciations to Stockett and her moving interpretation of the relationship of Caucasian housewives and their African-American maids the public gets a rare white-washed version of events dealing with the civil rights movement going on within the interior of the households
Sex, love, depression, guilt, trust, all are topics presented in this remarkably well written and performed drama. The Flick, a 2014 Pulitzer Prize winning drama by Annie Baker, serves to provide a social commentary which will leave the audience deep in thought well after the curtain closes. Emporia State Universities Production of this masterpiece was a masterpiece in itself, from the stunningly genuine portrayal of the characters of Avery and Rose, to the realism found within the set, every aspect of the production was superb.
