My motivation to join the Navy is grounded by the example my father set while serving our country both during wartime and afterwards. The honor and integrity he demonstrated led me to pursue a career in helping others.

Over the last 14 years, I developed my skills in architecture and construction management, and directly applied those skills to humanitarian aid, critical facilities, and institutional projects. The focus of my efforts is on where the outcomes will have the greatest impact, so that each new endeavor builds on past work, and that I’m always challenged and in a state of continuous improvement. This has led me to the Navy now.

Unexpectedly elevated to a position of authority and faced with a project that was behind schedule, over budget, and in crisis, I quickly standardized the decision-making process between team members so that we could respond to changing conditions.

However, the next step was more challenging. While evaluating the new data we were collecting, I saw that budget and schedule contingencies could become risk analyses rather than miscellaneous spending accounts. Request for information logs revealed team behaviors and further dynamics. Gradually, quality improved, as well as the confidence and dependability of the team.

Once I realized the standardized processes allowed for better scrutiny of information, I could then react and confidently guide the project. Given the responsibility, the team was empowered to make decisions. They were also asked to manage clearly, consistently, and act as partners.
