Moral Character Test When we were little, our parents enforced all sorts of rules that do not apply to us today. Many I understand because we could have hurt either ourselves or certain fragile items, or we could have messed up something important, but others I have trouble even now figuring out why that was a rule. One of these was that we were not allowed to plug the drain in the sink and fill it with water. My best guess is that we could potentially splash water everywhere, but it was in the bathroom, where everything gets wet anyway. Maybe Mom was afraid we would fall off the counter, too. A previous time, I recalled that even with the drain plugged, the water eventually drained on its own, so I suppose I figured that would happen this time, too. Even so, Mom discovered the sink filled and called all four of us together to ask who did it. Of course, no kid wants to get punished, especially since back then we always got spanked. None of us confessed. I imagine Mom probably suspected one of my brothers had done it, so I very easily might have gotten off scot-free. Yet I still felt bad about it. It was my fault, so I decided I might as well fix my mistake. As I began walking toward the bathroom to unplug the drain, Mom saw and figured out I was the culprit. I asked Mom recently why we had that rule, and she did not even remember it. Whether it was a precaution against making messes or possible injury or some other reason, I can distinctly recall it because of that incident, that one time I left water in the sink and almost avoided the blame. This is not to say that I have never done such a thing again; I still plug the drain every once and a while, but usually not to play in it, and I always remember to drain the sink afterwards. Mom no longer punishes us for doing it, I imagine because it is no longer an issue. We are responsible enough to know how to do it properly without making a mess, and we are old enough to be able to use the sink without climbing up on the
