Peer pressure is when a person or group influence one’s decision. Normally occurs when the child feels the need to fit in, the person will sometimes do something against their belief . Peer pressure affects teens more often than other age group, especially those with low self esteem. Peer pressure can spread very fast, Peer pressure can lead to drugs , illegal activities , and other non-socially acceptable activities. As well as negative peer pressure there is also positive peer pressure, which has an equal amount of effects on adolescents. Peer pressure is a very influential source , negatively and positively, on the teenagers. Peer pressure in teens is caused by a number of factors such as popularity , fitting in and low self-esteem. Teens who have low self-esteem are more susceptible to do things they normally wouldn’t do for a confidence boost. It helps provide examples of what not to do. The effects of positive peer pressure in teen life make making decisions later in life much better. Another form of peer pressure is a teen whose friends do not party or use drugs will be less likely to participate in those of activities in fear of rejection. In a study it showed how positive peer pressure helps when we don’t even know it, “ The most effective act was another child going first… When one child intervenes, all bystanders suddenly have social permission to intervene” ( Rosenberg , 494 ) . This is because people never wanna be considered an outsider, so if a behavior isn’t introduced teens are unsure if they should do the behavior or not.
