How could two close friends drift so apart that the only action worth taking is revenge, a look into the past might help us see. Two young boys, each from well off and respected families were the best of friends. Some friendships we create as children can develop into long lasting bonds that carryout into adulthood. However, only some, other friendships may be hindered by proximity or an unhealthy relationship may have formed and maybe even both. It can plainly be seen that Montresor and Fortunato were as different as night and day, but no matter their differences the boys were inseparable from an early age. About this age youths begin to take interest in the opposite gender, and this was no different for our Montresor and Fortunato. Unfortunately, both Montresor and Fortunato took interest in Anastasia, thus forming a rift in their friendship. Montresor had confided in Fortunato of his interest in Anastasia but Fortunato’s response was not a welcome one. “I also like Anastasia.” replied Fortunato. “Why her?” asked Montresor impatiently. Fortunato chuckled and casually replied “why not?” Although he felt betrayed Montresor could only sigh. He was always submissive, as toddlers Montresor never complained when Fortunato would take his toys, but Anastasia was different. Although his only response was a sigh he would not allow Fortunato to win her over. When Montresor heard the news of Fortunato’s leave he could not help but to feel joy, now he would not need to compete for Anastasia’s affection. “Don’t worry, I’ll return, I am only leaving to study with my father, when I come back I shall be a man.” stated Fortunato. “Then until then.” Montresor happily replied.     In the Cask of Amontillado, our narrator’s situation is one he is quite happy being in. Our narrator is Montresor, an Italian man rich with pride, and you quickly learn through his narration that he is intelligent, conniving, and extremely sinister. Throughout the story, everything Montresor does is motivated by one thing, his own thirst for vengeance. Montresor explains his actions are a result of Fortunato constantly abusing him and finally going too far, but he never explains anything Fortunato has done to insult him. When we meet Fortunato, he is extremely friendly towards Montresor, albeit a little intoxicated, so much that he makes Montresor’s story of “a thousand injuries” seem unbelievable (Cask 1). Compared to Gilman’s narrator whose spiral out of control was triggered by her forced seclusion from the outside world, it seems that Montresor’s insanity come from inside his own head. There is no evidence that suggest any attempts by Fortunato to belittle or insult Montresor in any way. I believe that Montresor may have been jealous of Fortunato’s success in life, and that is what drove him to vengeance. For example, on their way to the catacombs Fortunato makes a hand gesture of the Masons, a secret brotherhood, which Montresor doesn’t understand. Collodi succeeds in pointing out that disobedience and pleasure-seeking behavior lead to evil and unhappiness.
