I have inherited a world that is perplexingly complex, but that does not need to be the case. In this complex society money is the factor that drives nearly all decisions. “Money is the root of all evil” is a common idiom, although this is a fallacy that many people fail to recognize. Money is not the root of evil in today’s society; Materialism is the evil that throws altruism aside. As Chris Lowney described vividly in Heroic Living, people today are immensely better off that they were in previous generations, but not necessarily happier or more satisfied. Lowney used the Macbeth quote “a tale / Told by an idiot, full of sound and fury, / Signifying nothing.” to describe life without meaning. Finding your meaning is paramount to a successful and fulfilling life. When you are eighteen and just out of high school finding your life’s meaning seems like a fairly daunting task. Ever since watching Robert Reich’s documentary Inequality For All I have been interested in finding a way to increase opportunities for children who were not as fortunate as I was growing up. A pathway to do this has not yet, dawned on me, but supplying school supplies, or even opening schools in impoverished areas would be a good start. I want to live a life where I have no financial worries and I will be able to help my kids pay for their college education, and give them the tools necessary to have a better life than I had. It is said that people will forget what you said to them, but they will not forget the way you made them feel. I hope to make a positive impact in the lives of children across the world and to help even the world’s playing field. In reflecting on my own fortune I wonder how many kids with more talent than myself never get a chance to develop their minds because of poverty.
