Modern American honour values bravery, freedom and hard work. Honor has been expressed different for years and years in different countries. Honour is defined of someone having high respect, courage and being selfless. Honour can also be viewed as someone sacrificing something or themselves; like our US soldiers. Nothing stays the same and just like honour it has changed over time, many times depending on what is valued. History tells its own story from different perspectives of honour.
For centuries women weren’t able to leave the house without a male escort. Nowadays that has changed so women are more independent and are part of honour too. In some countries even the women are part of the military. In a 2012 article, The Art of Manliness, it claims that “honor lost was manhood lost. Men would strut their honour by doing dangerous and possible life threatening activities. This goes all the way back to Ancient Rome times when there was gladiators. Gladiators were armed combatant men who entertained the Roman audiences in violent confrontations with other gladiators, wild animals, and condemned criminals. This was a cruel victory, but they were treated like heroes and considered honourable for their bravery. The women weren’t allowed to be part of those events, but honour still pops up throughout ancient times and literature like “the epic poems of Homer are primarily about honor and man’s quest to achieve and maintain it” (The Art of Manliness). Old stories would describe men being honourable, never hear anything about a woman.

We consider slavery to be an illegal act and something bad but the Old South considered most slave masters to be very honorable people. If honor has changed so significantly over the past 150 years just imagine what it will be like in the next years to come.
Honor, just as today, is the way your name is viewed by others in the public. Threats toward ones honor might be defended differently in the public view. Honor varied between genders. Males felt it necessary to defend their honor when another slighted their masculinity, family, or physical ability. Females felt honor too. They often saw it important to defend their honor like did the males. Usually it was defended by gossip or name-calling but on occasion did result in physical violence as well. Females saw honor in a moral sense. Ones sexual activity or lack thereof before marriage, fidelity in marriage and celibacy after marriage all proved a woman to be honorable. Just like today, a personal reputation would be on the line if called a demoralizing name.
The roles that men and women were expected to live up to would be called oppressive and offensive by today’s standards, but it was a very different world than the one we have become accustomed to in our time.

Respect to me is admiring someone for their abilities, qualities, or achievements. I think respect is always earned an can never be given. As soldiers soldiers we should always respect our peers because they have made the same sacrifice as us. But as soldiers we should have a higher level of respect for our NCOs because they have done their time an have earned it. Being respectful is not hard it is simple, just treat others the way we would like to be treated ourselves.
One rule of chivalry is that you have to honor and respect women. Back in the days of King Arthur this was carried out greatly but if you look at the lack of respect given to women today you see that this rule of chivalry no longer exists. Women’s right have made great strides in the past few decades but women are just not given the respect that they deserve. Women were put in high regards back in King Arthur’s day. Now they are not as respected as they should be. When you look at the cases of rape, assault, and battery you see just why the Knights were so honorable. There are some very honorable men in the world that treat women with respect and for that I commend them, but there are those who give men a bad name. The worst case of this that I have seen is when Bill Clinton, the President of the United States cheated on his wife with another. When the man that is the leader of the greatest country in the world is breaking these rules, why should civilians be expected to keep them?

Honor is a value that was present during many occasions in the play. This value can be seen in Oedipus. He promised the citizens of Thebes that he would find the murderer of Laius and free the lands from the plague. The murderer was to be exiled from Thebes. Oedipus later found out that he himself was the murderer. Even though he was king, he honored the punishment and exiled himself from Thebes. The New Testament states that honor in women meant positive shame. Positive shame is the sensitivity of one 's own reputation. A shameless person is considered a dishonorable woman. In the chapter "Scar" the characteristic of honor and respect is first noticed. In this chapter An-mei finds out how her mother deserted her, her mother did leave for a good reason, which was to maintain the honor of her family, but either way her mother left her. A person's character can set them up for their future. Is your character and the way you go through life , the way you want your future? Character is defined as the mental and moral qualities distinctive to an individual. Many people choose who they surround themselves with people who have good morals and earned what the got for their future. The honor code is a great way to build up a great character and prepare you for your future without cheating your way through. While people may not follow it and keep it a secret, there should be an honor code in schools because it prevents cheating, keeps people accountable by consequences, and we want to live in a trustful environment.
