As long as their job role is challenging, engaging, exciting, and inspiring to them, they will stay. As soon as the “glamour” of a job wears off, they move on to something more interesting and challenging. You might be surprised to learn that Baby Boomers job hopped just as much as today’s Millennials when they were in their twenties. Sherry Buffington, co-author of Exciting Oz: How the New American Workforce Is Changing the Face of Business Forever and What Companies Must Do to Thrive, says that they have the upper hand because they are perfectly fine working dozens of different jobs in their lifetime. “In a survey conducted by IdeaPaint of 600 employed Millennials, 49 percent believe that poor management is dragging their company down; 45 percent attribute that to the lack or misuse of technology solutions.” (Avallon) This helps the reader to better understand the mentality of millennial’s. Not Only Are Millennials Redefining Adulthood but Are They Changing the American Dream as Well?
The description given for my generation, the Millennials (Generation Y) is mainly accurate. We are the group who were born between the years 1980-1994, (ages 19-33), and considered young workers. According to the case study, Generation Y is known for changing employers and professions. I agree with this statement, and from my experience we are the ones who are trying to find a career that best fits us. Employees who are in the Generation Y category are more likely to change employers if they do not feel connected and appreciated by their employers. According to a researcher, Stephanie Kodatt from Northern State University, Generation Y employees are more likely to be loyal to their employers if employers are willing to guide them in developing skills (Kodatt, 2009). Generation Y-ers are also trying to find themselves and develop new skills as they gain experience in the corporate world. The case study fails to include that we are the generation (Generation Y) who are more likely to take advantage of technology. For instance, in the case study Raja, age 27, who is part of Generation Y, was the only team member who bought her laptop to look up information for the project team. For Generation Y, technology improves our lifestyle as far as information and communication. I believe that Generation Y is the least understood generation.
The generation that I was born into can sometimes be easily misunderstood by those in earlier generations. The individuals in my generation get thrown many different labels such as those that Rosie Evans (n.d.) listed in her article, “Millennials, Generation Y, the Lost Generation, boomerang kids, the Peter Pan generation…” and more. This can impact us as a whole because some will begin to live by the labels, in some cases that can be negative but in others it may be beneficial. Many people in this generation believe that they can’t reach their full potential due to labels and prejudgment, while there are others believe nothing can hold them back. It is safe to say that the working life for millennial generation has been and will be different to that of generations past. Gurenteed jobs after leaving school, college, or university are now a thing of the past. These days placing responsibility of your career progression into the hands of someone else can even be considered passé.
As the largest generation on the planet (Jenkins), the Millennials (otherwise known as generation Y) have faced plenty of scrutiny from the previous generations. A Millennial is the demographic group made up of anyone who was born between the years 1980 and 2000. This group of young people has proved to be a great contribution to society and also to the advancement of technology. They do things in their own ways and on their own terms, always approaching a problem in the most efficient way possible for everyone. Millennials have settled numerous issues in our society and they are expected to change our world exponentially. Millennials adapt to new technologies very quickly, however, while Millennials see themselves in generally positive terms such as ‘tech-savvy’ and ‘up to date’, many people from the older generations see them as ‘spoiled’ and ‘lazy’. The new technologies do make living everyday life easier and more functional, however, Millennials are not at all ‘lazy’ for taking advantage of them.
