An Italian scholar in the 1300s, Petrarch, created the name "dark ages" after the fall of Rome (Movie Talk-Dark Age). This is because he wanted to teach people that since the Ancient Greeks and Romans were in the "light" of learning the middle ages was in the "dark". The time period happened in Europe between 500 and 1500 was a "dark age" and a period of growth called the "growth age".
