Experiencing a major weather event, such as a hurricane or tornado, can the first truly fear-inducing or awe-inspiring events a child can experience. My earliest memory of a major weather event was when I went a the beach in Florida a few hours before Tropical Storm Bonnie hit. When looking at the sky from the shore, all you could see was a line of menacing clouds approaching. I could only stand and stare due to the sheer amazement I felt. Once I regained my ability to move, all I did was ask my uncle about what that cloud was and why it was there. This curiosity and fascination followed me as I grew up. My favorite television shows as a child were Planet Earth and Blue Planet, and I would spend as much time outside as I could. When I reached my senior year of high school and started applying to schools, I knew that I wanted to pick a major that would allow me to turn my passion for science into a career. I spent months researching environmental science careers and majors, but nothing I found seemed to sit right with me until I came across meteorology. I never realized meteorology was an area I could study, despite my interest in storms as a child, but it combined my love of environmental science with the talent I had in math and science. While I chose my major with very little prior meteorology knowledge, I ended up really enjoying it. When I applied to Rutgers, I also applied to join the WeatherWatchers Living-Learning Community. This was a program where students interested in meteorology, broadcasting, or both all lived together in a dorm and worked on meteorology or television related projects together. We all had to take an introductory meteorology course, as well as create and film our own forecasts to broadcast on the Rutgers television network. I also plan to minor in both marine science and mathematics. As of right now I want to focus on climate, which is one of the possible focuses for students majoring in meteorology at Rutgers. The effects of climate change and the subsequent actions needed to take to minimize climate change and its effects interest me especially since decisions on what actions to take concerning climate change could be critical in the next few years. On a personal level this interests me because of where I grew up. While the town I lived in was not a coastal town, I spent many summers on the Jersey shore so I know first hand how much sea level rise could destroy, in terms of the coastal environment as well as the communities located there. The time I spent on the New Jersey coast also influenced my interest in marine science. The ocean always fascinated me so I plan to learn more about oceanography and marine science over the next few years of college, and possibly focus more on marine science or oceanography in graduate school. Pursuing a minor in mathematics will give me a greater understanding of mathematics as a whole, which will aid me in upper level meteorology courses as well as graduate school. Although the tornado of 10 June 1938 has been known about, at least anecdotally, within the scientific community since it was brought to light in 1939 by Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer, this potentially rich source of historic information has lain fallow. It is within this rich field of mobile, American thinking that we undertake this effort. A team of scientists with courage, brains, and even heart brought the resources to bear on the challenge.
I was recently accepted into the Exploratory Studies college at NC State, and am beyond excited to hopefully continue my academic career at NC State University. Although I am currently undecided on my major, I've shown the most interest in math and science related subjects, and hope to pursue similar avenues of study at State through the Exploratory Studies program. I am interested in exploring different career paths that I may have not yet considered, and believe that this program will provide me with the resources necessary to truly discover what I want to do for the rest of my life. Although I currently do not have any specific career objectives, I am confident that I will leave NC State prepared to build a successful career, regardless of my eventual major. I am excited at how much NC State and the Exploratory Studies college has to offer, and hope to eventually graduate with the experience and knowledge to begin a professional career.
As my family and I were enjoying watching our family-friends continue to win in the Little League World Series, we were hearing news of a possible historical storm preparing to hit the gulf coast. The Ewa Beach team, with my Uncle Clint as a coach and his son Ty, continued to win and the Louisiana team stuck around. Even though they were out of the tournament, it was decided that it was not safe for them to go back yet. Ewa Beach went back to Hawaii as World Champions, while Louisiana eventually boarded the flight home unsure of what they would see. Damages and Description:
Thunder rolled intensely outside, my aunt, mother, sister and I were sat calmly in the basement. We had been through this many times before; I mean afterall, Kansas was part of Tornado Alley. 2. My sister and I were young when this happened, her probably four or five, me about eight. 3. Before we had even started driving to my aunt’s house; since she’s the only one with a basement; my sister and I were complaining about being hungry. 4. Mom said she would get us something to eat soon, but then the sirens started blaring. 5. She called my aunt and told her we would be over in about ten minutes. 6. Me and my sister continued to complain about being hungry because, we always had to get what we wanted. 7. So my mom stopped at McDonald’s and got us some food. 8. After we were almost five minutes later than we said we would be my aunt panicked. 9. Jenny, my aunt, was calling like crazy. 10. When we finally got to her house she lectured my mom about how it wasn’t safe to have us out there like that with a tornado in the area. 11.Afterwards, we all sat on the porch and watched the storm. 12. That’s my favorite memory with my family, and it’s one I’ll never forget.
In May of 1931, black clouds the size of the Rockie Mountains pondered over our farm house. We have had storms before, but nothing like this. I began getting worried, so I asked Mother, “Do you think this will pass over?”
The St. Louis Tornado or The Great Cyclone of 1896 took place on Wednesday, May 27, 1896, just after 5:00 pm. This tornado was not only the single worst disaster in St. Louis history but the St. Louis Tornado was one of the most destructive and deadliest tornados in United States history. The storm caused approximately one hundred million dollars in damage to the City of St. Louis and East St. Louis. In today’s dollars this would equal about two point nine billion dollars in damages. It would take decades for St. Louis and East St. Louis to fully recover from the devastation.
The career I want to pursue when I go to college is in marine science. This career sparks my interests and fits my character style. As a child, I was intrigued by stories that took place in the ocean or along the beach. Sea creatures and indigenous areas always left me wanting to learn more. Even though natural disasters were devastating, they caught my attention too. The college I selected is the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA) I found it to be an affordable college choice and have the most academic advantages in my career choice to become a Marine Biologist. Although I have not participated in many marine aquatic activities, I still chose to research the career path to becoming a Marine Biologist.
In August 2005, at the tender age of 7, I received the most devastating news. I was told by my family that a hurricane was coming to my city, New Orleans, Louisiana. Because of this storm, Hurricane Katrina, I was told that I would most likely have to move away for a long time, meaning the rest of my life. My family and I lost everything, and the hurricane ended up destroying the entire city completely. This was heartbreaking to me for a plethora of reasons, including that I lost loved ones and was separated from the rest of my family at such an early age. This ravaging storm marked the most drastic change of my life.
Climate, weather, and meteorology are 3 words that seem to be the same but in reality differ significantly. Two of these concepts pertain to the atmosphere but differ in what time and place they are studied in, and the last one is studying these concepts.
When I first thought of what I wanted to do with my life after college, the first thing I thought of was helping people. The next step in deciding what I wanted to do with my life was to exam how I could accomplish this goal. I started pondering and I was thinking about how much I love to take care of my body. Health care and personal hygiene has always been an important factor in my life. So I decided to major in Health Science. With this major, I will be able to further my education in ways to be healthy and possibly learn how to help others. I decided that being a health physician or nutritionist was something that I was really interested in. This is where communication studies came in. I figured that if I minor in communication studies, I could improve my oral and written communication to better help in my future of nutrition.
Marine Biology is what I would like to study. I want to become a marine biologist because I want to discover new species. I want to go to the 70% of the ocean that has not been discovered. Marine biologists also get to go travel to different places. They not only get to seethings underwater which not many people get to see, but they also get to see places on land which not many people get to see. Marine biologists are also interesting to me because they get to swim for most of their work day. I love the water and swimming. Marine biology is a very interesting and intriguing career to me.
My chosen major is Psychology and Pre-Law. Psychology is defined as the study of the mind and behavior and how someone or a group of people think. I chose Psychology because during my middle school and high school years, I always studied how people would act and was always able to identify certain events or actions that trigger someone 's emotions or behavior to change. Most of the people I used to study was the people I had class with because most of them I saw every day and known them throughout my middle and high school years. Over the years, I learn the things that triggered changes in their attitude and behavior. I was able to identify when one of them was angry. When one was upset and didn 't want to bet bother and when one wanted to fight someone. After awhile, I realized that if I can be able to understand my classmates, then I know I can understand and help people as my career profession.
I began to get fascinated by our capitalist world’s economy at a very early age of my life. Growing up, I was incredibly curious to unravel how systems function, and this curiosity developed into a burning desire to learn how processes and organizations operate and run our world. As I started my first job, I realized how much I needed to be better acquainted with the science of money making and the scientific approaches to money management. Later on in my life, being within a company system, I wanted to see the big picture by learning where such a company stands in the midst of all other business interactions locally and internationally. Being involved in the company’s practices I started analyzing the methods used by my managers, the causes and consequences of their managerial choices.

Towards the end of 1989, my family and I were on vacation in Fort Myers, Florida. We drove from Trenton, New Jersey all the way to Florida where my grandfather lived. It was a long trip to undergo, especially being six years old and knowing that my father never stopped the car. By the time we arrived at Fort Myers, it was a beautiful sunny day. The wind was gusting enough to pull my hair back, and I was admiring the palm trees, coconuts, and lizards near the Gulf of Mexico.
