In today’s society, high school students are held to high standards. They are expected to be able to keep up grades, perform in extracurricular activities, keep up a social life, consider scholarships and colleges, and volunteer within the community, among other tasks. For most students, these tasks are not a problem. However, all of these things in combination are too high a task for children with mental illnesses to reach. Many students with depression, ADHD, anxiety, and OCD are put in positions where they are unable to perform to the standards that their able-minded peers are held to. These mental illnesses can cause a decrease in work ability, focus in classrooms, and general school performance.

There are so many types of mental illnesses that affect people every day. When some people think of mental illnesses they think of the ones that would cause people to have physical symptoms as well, but that’s untrue, there are many more that you would never know anyone has if you were to see them on the street. As defined by the 2008 encyclopedia “a mental illness is any disease of the mind or brain that seriously affects a person’s ability or behavior. Symptoms of a mental illness may include extreme moods, such as excessive sadness or anxiety, or a decreased ability to think clearly or remember well.” A mentally ill person has severe symptoms that damage the person’s ability to function in everyday activities and situations. Every nation and every economic level can be affected by a mental illness. In the United States alone about 3% of the population has severe mental illness and to add to that number about 40% of people will experience a type of mental illness at least once in their lives. Some cases of mental illnesses can go away on their own, but some cases are so severe that they require professional treatment. There is so much more available to help people recover from their symptoms than in the past.

This is what we expect of our students dealing with a variety of mental health issues. The policies and procedures are established to meet the needs of all students. The mental health issues are recognized and evaluated based on the best placement for the student to receive an education. The public school system has the responsibility to provide a free and appropriate education. The school does the best they can to provide a whole school approach to deal with the increasing number of mental health concerns. However, the mental health concerns carry on beyond high school.
The lasting effects of untreated mental illnesses can remain in adulthood and negatively affect a person’s psyche. These effects can be detrimental to not only one’s mental health, but physical health as well. These effects can be lessened by seeking treatment, whether therapy or medication.
