A social need that is experienced worldwide is mentally illness. Mental illness in my opinion is one of the most neglected, as well as, the most vulnerable population and today time. The reasons being, a lot of people, as well as, professional people do not understand the disease. So therefore, if they do not understand the mental illness disease, how can they be an assist to the person/persons who suffer with the disease? When I say professional speaking of the law enforcer (police). And the economic unjust is there is not a lot of funds to enhance the improvement with this problem. In addition, there is not a lot of people who are competent or knowledgeable about the illness. Then again, you have some mental health professional (social worker) that is not competence with this illness. This hit close to home for me, I have a brother who is mentally ill. The therapist wasn’t competence when it came to his illness. The therapist left more unanswered questions then answered questions when it came to my brother’s …show more content…

The last I check the police does not have training on how to approach a psychotic individual. You cannot treat a psychotic individual like a regular individual. They for the most part are having a psychotic breakdown which includes but not limited to hallucination, bipolar and possibly schizophrenic. So they won’t be able to do what is asked of them by the police. That why so many get killed by the hands of the police, which is ironic cause their motto state, “to serve and protect”. The social needs of the vulnerable population in the area of mental illness are to have a social knowledge about the illness and try to promote social change and economic growth, meaning pertaining to funds.
