The earliest human dissections date back to ancient Egypt and Greece where records of Anatomy were hand drawn and physiology was largely theorized. I find it fascinating that modern imaging technology allows us to view the body’s organs to see their functions and diagnose possible conditions or diseases. I first developed an interest in the field of Medical Sonography during my pregnancy with my first child. When I laid eyes upon the images of the growing little person inside of me, I knew I wanted to share in the joys of others as they experienced this as well (realizing this may not always be the case for others). I aspire to exceed expectations in this field and work with doctors to access possible conditions. As a student who has always been passionate about science and excelled in these areas, I have had the opportunity to share my knowledge while assisting a physics instructor in the laboratory with experiments he plans to introduce in future classes and while tutoring struggling students in Chemistry, A&P, and Statistics. This has been a rewarding experience for me as I desire to see others succeed. This has also allowed me to stay sharp in these areas and has helped me learn to communicate more effectively; both of which will be beneficial to my program. This year, I’ve had the honor of instructing a science club at a private school where I led a group of students through hands-on learning projects and experimentations. Although I demonstrate a strong background in Science, I knew it would be important to gain some medical experience. As an ultrasound technician/sonographer I will have the ability to see dangerous defects within the human anatomy and begin a lifelong profession with many benefits. The Ultrasound was first invented in the early 1900’s and was surprisingly not used to produce photos of a fetus. In 1917 Paul Langen a marine life scientist used a form of ultrasound equipment in his attempt to detect submarines. After many failed attempts at using high frequency sound waves Dr. Ian Donald and his team in Glasgow, Scotland invented the first ultrasound machine in 1957. Dr. Donald even tested his machine on patients within a year of completing the invention, by the late 1950’s ultrasounds became routine in Glasgow hospitals.
I have always been fascinated with the medical field ever since I was little, my first choice for electives were always health science and anatomy classes. After my cousin, Deanna, had her first child and receive her first ultrasound, I knew that was what I wanted to do for the rest of my life. The ultrasound technician had made her feel so comforted and just made the entire experience enjoyable for everyone; I’m eager to be able to start my life with a job that I know I will love. Anytime that I meet someone who is in the field themselves, I always ask questions and listen to what they do throughout the day to get some real insight on what being a technician really entails.
Being a compassionate person will help me in the sonography field to a great extent. In my opinion, if a patient has something wrong with them or has negative results during a test, I will be able to comfort them well. Being compassionate and detail-oriented will help when explaining the procedure with a calm and reassuring presence. I know that when I have medical procedures performed on me, I am usually very nervous, so I can definitely use that personal experience to relate to patients who may feel uneasy and scared during any procedure I will be performing. I have always known that I was a quick learner and that when I learn something it sticks, and I do not forget it. This helps me also continuously build up more and more knowledge about different topics. With entering a field like sonography, I can only imagine, that like most other medical fields, things are constantly getting updated and changed. As I see it, this field uses technology as its diagnostic tool, newer products and software will always be coming out. I am a person who will be able to adapt to this ever-changing field by being a quick learner. Diagnostic medical sonography is a profession where sonographers direct high-frequency sound waves into a patient’s body through the use of specific equipment to diagnose or monitor a patient’s medical condition. As described by the Bureau of Labor Statistics, this examination is referred to as an ultrasound, sonogram, or echocardiogram. The high-frequency sound waves emitted from the handheld device, called a transducer, bounce back creating an echo and therefore produce an image that can be viewed on the sonographers computer screen. This image provides the sonographer and physician with an internal image of the patient’s body that will be used in the diagnosis. The most familiar use of ultrasound is used in monitoring pregnancies and is provided by obstetric and gynecologic sonographers, who also provide imaging of the female reproductive system. Other types of sonography include; abdominal sonography, breast sonography, musculoskeletal sonography, neurosonography and cardiovascular sonography. Due to the vast nature of uses in sonography, most professionals study one field that they choose to specialize in. Diagnostic medical sonography is a rapidly growing field because of the increase in medical advances. The area of Cleveland, Ohio has continued to rise in the medical field with great strides, providing better career prospects with the availability of numerous employment positions.
During the time that I had the opportunity of having Ms. Younus as my student, she consistently impressed me by demonstrating a strong desire in becoming a future physician. Her eagerness to learn about the problems patients were experiencing was evident as she came motivated each week and asked insightful questions. The dream that I most desire in life is to become a Diagnostic Medical Sonographer. I’ve always had an interest in the inner workings of the human body, but I also value life, and care for others, and my happiness is the happiness of others. Although this career has its bumps on the road just to see mothers face light up when they see the image of their unborn baby is such a breath taking experience. This all originated from going to one of my sisters’ ultrasound appointment that I ended up going to all my sisters’ ultrasound appointments. It just so happens that I believe that I can best and most effectively “lend a hand” when a person is at their bodily weakest. From a single semester of shadowing—a total of 11.75 hours—under physicians and surgeons alike, I have experienced a taste of the medical field from the fascinating gruesome finesse of an open-heart surgery to the day-to-day clinical patient interaction that makes up so much of a medical professionals career. From a community standpoint, I believe that a person does not need to be a doctor to express and achieve care. Because of that, I have joined organizations such as Chords4Kids on the TCU campus—that sings nostalgic songs from the 2000s to down-syndrome children at the local education center as well as at retirement homes, and other events alike—and the TCU GO Center, which mentors local high-school students during their college application process. During the endoscopy procedure to determine the stage of her cancer, she said it was the sonographer who made her feel calm and treated her with dignity. Even though the ultrasound tech did not understand her language, it did not stop her from showing compassion to her patient. So it was that great care and sense of compassion that made me greatly appreciate what sonographers do for their patients. This is a field that is constantly changing and there are always ways to improve. There is always new technologies coming out and ways to improve as person that will help you deliver the best care for your patients. Sophomore year was most likely the worst year of his life. He had been through many family problems, and was about in the hospital for about a month. Things weren’t going so well for about Three weeks while being in the hospital. One night, while he was sleeping, they woke him up to do a sonogram on his intestines. While they were examining his stomach to see how he was doing, they then saw that things have drastically began to get better. Ultrasound Technicians are very valuable in the world of health care. Also known as Diagnostic Medical Sonographer, an Ultrasound Technician uses special machines and equipment that operates on sound waves to determine or diagnose medical problems for patients. There are specializations within this field in which some individuals explore. For instance, areas of specialization includes but not limited to; pregnancy, heart health, gynecology, and abdominal sonography. I had known for years that I wanted to work in the health care field, but I always believed it would be as a doctor. I watched for the first few years of my brother’s life as he struggled with different health challenges such as being born premature, having croup and breathing difficulty, and speech impairment. Watching my brother struggle and then being able to overcome these difficulties, as well as seeing other children around him who were not as fortunate, really pushed me even at a young age to make a difference. My family, both immediate and extended, were very supportive, and I felt a real positive push towards working hard to achieve that goal of working in health care. In high school, I was fortunate enough to do a cooperative placement at the Peterborough Regional Health Center’s Intensive Care Unit. Limits are only set by our own minds. Though silencing the mind has always been a struggle, as it controls our actions, expectations as well as our goals. Curiosity, on the other hand, a constantly demanding positive attribute, I concluded that something needs to be done. starting from medical school into further expanding into becoming a fine diagnostician is a journey that excites me and a goal that suits my character perfectly.
