Deep in the humid jungles of present day Mexico, lay a lost Mayan civilization whose disappearance would puzzle archeologists to this day. The Mayan civilization claims to be one of the first and oldest mesoamerican civilizations : a civilization that alone prospered, declined and whose remains have people wondering how such a complex maya civilization could have existed.
Located between the Atlantic and Pacific oceans , on the Yucatan peninsula lies the Mayan empire, one of the most developed civilizations of its time. ( Maya 2009). The Mayans’ geography consisted of many features such as jungles, highlands and lowlands.( Maya 2009). Due to this they were able to stay in villages and still have enough food to survive. Eventually the olmec culture would influence other civilizations such as the Maya.( civilizations of middle america 2012). The Mayans also were farmers and used that skill to help them create an agricultural surplus that then allowed them to live in more places such as the high and lowlands and still have enough food.( history.com staff 2009). Their complex calendar system contained of 3 calendars, Haab, the Tzolkin and the Long Count.( Maya calendar 2017)..One of the Mayans calendars named the Haab is a calendar that we use today and is based 365 days of the year.( history.com staff 2009). The calendar ended in December of 2012 yet people thought it meant the world's end. The Tzolkin is a 260 day calendar used by the mayans to determine religious and ceremonial events.( Mayan calendar 2017). The third and last calendar used by the Mayans was the Long Count.
