Why does a caged bird sing and why does Maya Angelou connect so deeply with that thought? Maya lived through terrible oppression of African Americans and had a need to share her voice. Although she sang and danced, poetry is how she effectively expressed herself. Through her poems “Still I Rise” and “I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings,” she brings light to life without freedom. Maya had similar styles, but different meanings, making her poems well known today.
Maya Angelou, originally Marguerite Johnson, was born in St. Louis Missouri on April 4th, 1928. She grew up with her brother and grandmother in Stamps, Arkansas where she had first hand experiences with discrimination. Her first role was in a production of Porgy and Bess. Maya was also a civil rights activist who organized and starred in Cabaret for Freedom for the Southern Christian Leadership Conference (SCLC). In 1969, she published her very first memoir by the name I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings about her adult life (Maya Angelou Biography).
Maya did many wonderful things before her poems were written and published. In 1959, Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. requested that she be the northern coordinator for SCLC. Maya was the associate editor for The Arab Observer in Egypt from 1961 to 1962 and feature editor of the African Review from 1964 to 1966 in Ghana. In 1974, Angelou was appointed to Bicentennial Commission by Gerald Ford and to the Commission for International Woman of the Year by Jimmy Carter. In North Carolina, 1982, she became Reynolds Professor of American Studies at Wake Forest University (Poet Maya Angelou). In 1978, Maya published “Still I Rise.” Overall, the poem conveyed the self-confidence hidden inside of her. At the time, she was constantly pushed down and ignored by society. Maya questioned their need to see her fail by asking if they wanted to see her broken with a bowed head and lowered eyes.
