I’m sitting there trying to solve a math homework problem that seems to have no answer--eraser marks have filled my paper and my brain is beginning to ache. But then suddenly something clicks: I see a solution. Sitting there deliberating what possible ways to solve a problem, and I finally get it. This is the best part of math for me. The challenge of math has to be the driving force for me to want to excel in this subject. For most students math is that subject filled with endless numbers that never seem to relate to the real world in anyway. In almost every math class, I’ve almost always heard a student say “When will we ever use this stuff in real life?” Unlike most students I was somehow able to see how math could be applied to the real …show more content…

Before high school, I had just been another student wondering how knowing the inverse of “y” could help me succeed in life. The first math class I took in high school was geometry. It was very different from all the algebra I had been doing previously, but I somehow managed to get an A every marking period. It was not the easiest class, but I believe that’s what I liked most about it. I would often watch as my classmates were frustrated by the endless amount of reasons for proving a triangle was a triangle, but I sat there determined to find the solution. If I don’t get something, I don’t stop until I do. I remember during the end of one of my trigonometry classes, my teacher had a put up one of her law of cosine problems on the board. It was a tough one. Me and three of my other friends from the class sat there during our lunch periods, determined to solve the problem. When we finally did, it felt exhilarating. Of course, our stomachs were grumbling a little bit, but we solved it and it was worth …show more content…

Out of all the AP’s I was taking my junior year, this was the one I was most excited about. Everyone told me it would be a challenge, but that only made more anxious for the class. The class was intense. We were learning new material almost every day and everything seemed to be so complex. Although the class was very challenging, I was able to pass the class with an A my first semester. Not only was I able to challenge myself with this class, I was able to see how math can connect to other subjects. Being that I plan to pursue biology in college, I was very fascinated by the connections I often made between my AP Biology class and my AP Calculus class.

My love for math has pushed me to further myself both educationally and in my extracurricular activities. When I was junior, I decided to join the math club. It was a refreshing feeling to be surrounded by people who share the same passion. In the math club, I am able to attend math conferences and participate in projects that showcase math’s connection to the real world. Overall, I get to expand my understanding of my math by sharing my curiosity with my
