Understanding Motivation: A Deep Dive into Maslow’s Hierarchy of Needs

There are many theories trying to explain the key to motivation and how to be successful. The three main theories are Maslow’s Hierarchy of Need, McGregor’s Theories X and Y, and the Herzberg’s two-factor theory. They all try to explain how employees are motivated and how organizations can be successful with their employees. However, I think the most important theory would be Maslow’s Hierarch of Needs. It is based on the individual person and how they respond to five needs categorized in a hierarchy. The hierarchy is shaped like a pyramid and each need is given based on how much the person depends on it. The first level and the most important would be physiological. It includes hunger, thirst, shelter, sex and other bodily needs that you depend It explains how people are motivated and why they are motivated. I think the tiers are accurate in how a person ranks ones needs to motivate themselves. Most people are definitely motivating themselves by the first tier first and then following up. Everyone needs food and water, they need a home, and they need to full fill their bodily needs. They are the basics to survival and the main motivators. People actually act like his theory because it represents the main components of living. I know when a person is hungry or thirsty that is the only thing that they can think about. They will find food or water and not stop until they are satisfied. Although Maslow’s theory does have some doubt and no actual evidence to support it, I think it can be catered to any individual based on their specific characteristics. Some of these needs depending on the person can fluctuate on the level of demand based on the person’s personality. I know some people who think social factors are more important than external factors. People who think like that would want to achieve affection, belonging, self- respect, and attention. They would try to gain attention by being a people pleaser, becoming a follower rather than a leader, and trying to find a place to belong to within a group.
