In our everyday lives we as humans are brought challenging questions that truly make us think. This topic being, are people evil or kind? I believe that by nature human beings are good, and that it is the fault of society that turns them bad. When given the opportunity to live with free choice, people make bad decisions out of anger, being bullied, or confusion. The cruel things people do, unknowingly affect other people’s everyday lives, but as seen through history, people overcome these evil acts. We see examples of perseverance, in history with Martin Luther King Jr., books like A Christmas Carol, and in today’s recent events, where communities come together like they did after the tragic shooting in Florida. The greatest thing about history is that we learn from our mistakes and take good from each situation. Some of those unaware people are those who took part in the school shootings. But rather than letting these people win, communities have come together to support each other. For instance, CSGV, an organization to stop gun violence have made a website to pursue a goal to stop this through a policy development, strategic engagement, and effective advocacy. As once Bill Bethel said, “a successful team is a group with many hands and one mind.” This quotes shows how the power of love from many can do anything with teamwork. This is why people everyday help each other such as when a lady named Carol Suchman bought a whole toy store to donate to homeless kids. This proves that people are kind because if humans were cruel, than why did this lady make such a big act of kindness? Martin Luther King Jr., is one of the most recognized, if not the greatest civil rights activist in this century. He has written papers and given speeches on the civil rights movement, but one piece stands out as one of his best writings. “Letter from Birmingham” was an intriguing letter written by King in jail in the city of Birmingham, Alabama. He was responding to a letter written by eight Alabama Clergyman that was published in a Birmingham Alabama newspaper in 1963 regarding the demonstrations that were occurring to stop segregation. The intended audience for this letter was of course the eight clergymen, but he also had a wider audience in mind because instead of sending each individual man a letter he had it published in the local newspaper.
On April 4, 1968 shortly after 1800 hours, Martin Luther King Jr. was fatally shot while standing on the hotel balcony of his second story room at the Lorraine Motel in Memphis, Tennessee (Saferstein, 2014). King was in Memphis to support a sanitation workers strike and was on his way to dinner when he was shot in the head and neck area. Martin Luther King Day is a day to remember all of the things that King did in his life including his life story, his “I Have a Dream” speech, and his memorable holiday. People celebrate to salute Martin’s accomplishments and thank him. “A day on, not a day off” has been told to express that the holiday is used to also encourage community service (Schulke). Whether or not humans are instinctively good or evil has been a much talked about debate for many years and is known as an unanswerable question. Determinists, such as Thomas Hobbs, have come to the conclusion that humans are naturally evil and it is within our basic instincts to be greedy, selfish and otherwise drawn to chaos. To understand how a person can cross the proverbial line from good to evil; evil itself must be given a definition. The word evil has been an overarching term to describe anything from biblical aspects to natural disasters, even to describe the human condition. For this paper the human aspect of evil will be solely focused on. Oxford dictionary describes evil as “profoundly immoral and malevolent.” To understand this further the philosopher Peter Dews Author of “The idea of Evil” writes “Basic notions of offence and punishment, of transgression and forgiveness, seem to lose their grip in the face of profound, far reaching desecrations of the human. Each of these experiments in present day are considered unethical however, they served their purpose in finding what psychological aspects contribute to evil in a given individual.

The cruel nature and intentions of people can either hurt or harm individuals or it can bring about resilience and determination. In the novel To Kill a Mockingbird, Harper Lee revealed that humans often have other motives in life; some are born to be evil in nature, some are naturally innocent and then there are some that are born to protect the innocent. Lee utilized a variety of symbols and themes that correlated with each other and thus had the ability to create questions in the minds of the readers. Are humans calculatedly cruel or is there some moral good in each of us? The impiety of a few can create a movement, imprison the innocent or reveal the sincerity of others.

Blaring sirens across the distance, we heard them coming towards us to our school. In horror we waited; a feeling of praise to be alive, however, for the rest of them a cold-hearted killer ripped away their lives right under them. Since warning signs were not visible, or they were, we just ignored them. How could a human being be so cruel, yet look as if nothing was wrong with them that was it they felt no raw emotions or remorse at all? Reminding us of the lives of children, teenagers, college students, and teachers who were wrongfully taken by cold-hearted killers during these three equally horrifying school shootings: Virginia Tech University, Sandy Hook Elementary School, and Marysville Pilchuck High School.
In our world today, we come across all sorts of people. Some you see do evil actions and some you see do good actions. The person doing a good action might be a psychotic killer-- you never know. The other person doing the evil action, could be a priest. Not everything you see people do shows what type of person they really are inside. These people may look one way on the outside, but the world can change the way they see the world and their ultimate actions. Regardless of how someone seems, they are consistently changing because of the evil energies of the world. Humans are all born good and pure, although as we grow up we are corrupted by the evil world around us.
