The occupation I chose for the report is marriage and family therapists. The SOC number is 21-1013. The definition of marriage and family therapists is, “Diagnose and treat mental and emotional disorders, whether cognitive, affective, or behavioral, within the context of marriage and family systems. Apply psychotherapeutic and family systems theories and techniques in the delivery of services to individuals, couples, and families for the purpose of treating such diagnosed nervous and mental disorders.” (Bureau of Labor Statistics, 2013).The average hourly wage is 17.47 and yearly salary is $36,340.
A marriage and family therapist (MFT) is a portion of mental health and the foundation of the discipline is theory and research of mental illness. Family issues are best treated within the family setting. A MFT is primary focused on treating individuals, but offer services for family, couples and group therapy. The MFT practices in mental health centers, private practice, inpatient facilities, health maintenance organizations, and employee assistance programs. An individual considering becoming a MFT may want to consider if they possess certain qualities. The qualities of a good MFT is compassion, empathy, interpersonal skills to work with a variety of people, listening skills, and speaking skills. A MFT would benefit from showing empathy and compassion when working with a client in stressful situation. Listening skills are important because the therapist needs to give their clients their full attention in order to understand the clients’ needs and problems. Speaking skills are important because the therapist needs to effectively communicate with their clients. These areas are important when considering if becoming a MFT is career one would want to
