Mars is a planet that is 35 million miles away from us, yet it is one of the closest neighbors we have. From 8 years old kids to scientists who are 80, all dreamed of being on Mars. Even if the manned Mars mission would not be a reality until late 2020s, thousands of hardworking individuals are chasing their dreams. The Martian is a science fiction novel written by Andy Weir that focuses on the survival of astronaut, Mark Watney on Mars. Watney was one of the 6 astronauts on Eris 3 program; unfortunately Watney was left stranded on Mars during an emergency evacuation. According to Statistic Canada more than 40% Canadian have volunteered in 2013, within which over 65% of youth age 15-19 had volunteered. On the contrast, according to Statistic Canada 5.4% of Canadian have violated the criminal code (of which 0.4% was traffic related). It is clear that the 40% stands out way more than the 5.4%. In the passage, Mark Watney thanked all of the people who pulled together the rescue mission for him. Within the novel, NASA, JPL (Manufacturing company), the Chinese National Space Administration had all worked overtime and delayed multiple projects to bring Watney back to Earth. Personally, I have volunteered for more than 150 hours last year and met dozens of other enthusiastic youth who wants to help others. Even though we are not professionally trained, we could still provide some assistance to those who needs it. This is the power of the care in society; it propels us to do beneficial things for other people. It is crucial for us to remain united, because in unity there is strength. The Martian rescue is a enormous achievement that was accomplished by the united strength of the USA and China. It would truly be a phenomenon if countries could unite and accomplish something as great as this
