Marilyn Monroe
When someone mentions Marilyn Monroe, one usually thinks off the seductive all-American sex goddess who captured the world with her woman-childlike charm. Yet not many know her as the illegitimate child who endured a childhood of poverty and misery, sexual abuse, and years in foster home and orphanages. Most people don’t realize that her disrupted loveless childhood may been the main reason to her early death. Norma Jeane Baker’s father, Edward Mortenson, had deserted her mother, Gladys Baker neè Monroe, before she was born on June, 1 1926, in the charity ward of Los Angeles General Hospital. Due to Gladys’ instability and the fact that she was unmarried at the time, Norma Jeane was placed in a foster home. At the age of 7, Norma Jeane lived briefly with her mother. Gladys began to show signs of mental depression, and a year later she was admitted to a rest home. Norma Jeane was then placed with a family friend for a year until being placed in another orphanage for another two years. Norma Jeane was once heard to reflect on this time and say: "The world around me then was kind of grim...I had to learn to pretend in order to...I don’t know.. block the grimness. The whole world seen sort of closed to me..(I felt) on the outside of everything, and all I could do was to dream up any kind of pretend game." They then married on June 19, 1942. "Grace Mckee (family friend she was living with) arranged the marriage for me, I never had much of a choice. There’s not much to say about it. They couldn’t support me, and they had to work out something. And so I got married." (Marilyn Monroe) Jim joined the Marines in 1943 and was send overseas. Norma Jeane, while working in a factory inspecting parachutes in 1944, was photographed by the army as a promotion to show women on the assembly line contributing to the war effort. One of the photographers asked to take further pictures of her. She began modeling bathing suites and, after bleaching her hair blonde, began posing for pinups and glamour photos. By spring of 1945, she was quickly known as a "photographers dream" and had appeared on 33 covers of national magazines. She then enrolled in a 3 month modeling course, and in 1946, aware ...

Soon after in 1962, Marilyn began seeing Joe DiMaggio frequently during this time and had finally agreed to remarry him. The wedding date was set for August 8, 1962. Fox rehired her on August 1 to complete "Somethings Got to Give" with a salary of $250,000, which was two and a half times the original amount. On August 5, 1962, she was found dead of an overdose of sleeping pills at the early age of 36. There has been much speculation about the events surrounding Marilyn’s death. In conclusion, Monroe’s was a tragedy in which her public, the media, and the Hollywood power brokers all share blame.

Born as Norma Jeane Mortenson on June 1st, 1926, Marilyn had a difficult upbringing due to the uncertainty of the identity of her father and her mother being mentally and financially unstable to care and raise her. This led Mortenson to be passed around from family members to family friends and foster homes, where she would be neglected, assaulted and sexually assaulted. Despite the many traumatic situations she’s encountered, she found her interest in beauty and acting inspired by one of her trustworthy guardians. This gave Mortenson a goal and hope in her difficult life.
He goes over how a man with a plentiful amount of money who only keeps it to himself is basically a waste and he even says in (Doc B) ‘The man who dies rich dies a disgrace’. She was always on movie sets and had several on and off relationships which led to high stress levels. Her Doctor decided to prescribe barbiturates (sleeping pills). She then had a bad habit of mixing alcohol with her sleeping pills which caused a different effect on her. She threatened her life on two different occasions, one time she attempted to throw herself out of her bedroom window, and the other was when she supposedly over dosed on her sleeping pills. Then they divorced and she started modeling. During this time is when she started doing magazines and photo shoots. Monroe also started bleaching her hair blonde around this time. Then she started to use the name Marilyn Monroe instead of Norma Jeane. She signed to Fox after passing her screen test. This is when her acting career started and was just the beginning of her legacy.

When he and his wife were married he had her sign a prenuptial agreement to where she agreed to him giving away virtually all of his amassed wealth. She called the police and shortly after they arrived, she called Ralph Greenson, who on arrival, couldn't bust down her bedroom door. He snuck through the backyard and broke her window. He found Marilyn dead, lying in her bed. They removed her body and debated that her time of death was approximately between 9:30-11:00 that night. They later stated in the paper that her death was a ‘probable suicide’. Her date of death was August 5, 1962, in Los Angeles, California, her home city. This was the beginning to her life story as a hero. This may not seem inspiring or heroic to many by the lack of knowledge a person may have on Norma. In the depths of her quotes lay a deep, heartfelt life though. For this quote may seem sensational and comical to the ear, but Marilyn was transferred to many foster homes not really having a parent that would show her the way. What a good role model would do though, and what Norma courageously has shown society, is that when life knocks you down, get up and hit life back twice as hard. Norma Jeane Mortenson, married Jim Dougherty, and started working. Soon she created the character Marilyn Monroe, she dyed her hair blonde, wore short dresses, and she became the momentous and inspirational character that everyone saw through television, newspapers, and photos. She was one of the greatest actors, singers, and models of the nineteen forties and fifties. But like every hero they suffer and create their own demise. Junot Diaz's short story “Fiesta, 1980” gives an insight into the everyday life of a lower class family, a family with a troubled young boy, Yunior and a strong, abusive father, Papi. The conflict, man vs. man is one of the central themes of this story. This theme is portrayed through the conflicts between Papi and his son. Papi asserts his dominance in what can be considered unfashionable ways. Unconsciously, every action Papi makes yields negative reactions for his family. Yunior simply yearns for a tighter bond with his father, but knows-just like many other members of his family-Papi’s outlandish ways hurts him. As the story unfolds it becomes obvious that the conflicts between Papi and himself-along with conflicts between Yunior and himself-affect not only them as individuals, but their family as a whole.
Yunior struggles with his exposure to male privilege in a Dominican family, as he is very sensitive. Yunior can not fully comprehend why men took actions that women didn’t attempt to do. For example, Papi made all the decisions in the family. “She and tío Miguel got themselves an apartment in the Bronx, off Grand Concourse and everybody decided that we should have a party. Actually, my pops decided...” (306). Papi decided that a party was obligatory to be thrown for their arrival, but not as his expense or home; Tia and Tío hosted it, despite it being Papi’s decision. Male privilege is shown in the way “the women laid out the food and like always nobody but the kids thanked them. It must be some Dominican tradition or something” (312). Instead of having both men and women lay the food, it is only the women’s job. Helping with the preparations is not their responsibility, nor is showing appreciation with a genuine thank you.
