Marijuana: More Friend Than Foe

Thomas Jefferson, one of America’s founding fathers, was among thirteen other U.S. presidents, including Barack Obama, who admitted to smoking marijuana. Yet, marijuana is known by many close-minded individuals as a harmful drug that should remain illegal for its supposedly precarious influence. Many people are falsely informed on this herb and its side effects. Marijuana is a greenish-gray mixture of the dried and shredded buds of the Cannabis Sativa plant (drugabuse.gov), with innumerable medical values that could help fight diseases and illnesses, yet some strongly stand with the outdated idea that the herb should remain illegal. Cannabis should be legalized in America not only for medical purposes, but also for recreational use by adults over the age of eighteen because it is a failed prohibition, it is not lethal, and it is beneficial for medical uses.

“It’s important for it to go forward because it’s important for society not to have a situation in which a large portion of people have at one time or another broken the law and only a select few get punished” (Barack Obama). This statement on Colorado’s legalization of marijuana came from the words of our own president, yet he has not done anything to stop this preposterous phenomenon. The prohibition of marijuana has not ceased the use and domestic production of the drug; but on the other hand it has wasted too many dollars and too many lives. This fallacious gateway argument falls apart when the legal alcohol is considered since it is much more likely than cannabis to lead people with addictive backgrounds to more dangerous drugs.

Marijuana is a beneficial, non toxic herb that is still being used today, despite its prohibition. This drug is not harmful, not addictive, and not fatal. Marijuana should be available to medical patients and recreationally for those over the age of eighteen. Marijuana should be treated as alcohol and tobacco, and the user’s right to choose to use these recreational drugs should be respected. After all, America is founded on a society built from individual rights and free choice, so marijuana should be one of those choices.
